Fire Closes Manhasset Theater

Theater checked after fire spread to gas meter.

A fire at the Clearview Manhasset on Plandome Road in Manhasset forced the theater to close Tuesday afternoon. A plastic dumpster at the rear of the theater caught fire, which spread to a nearby gas meter, said Chris Pisani, 1st deputy chief of the Manhasset Lakeville Fire Department. The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. “We were able to shut off the gas” at the theater, Pisani said. “We found the valve in the street, and turned it off.” National Grid also responded to the scene. The fire, which charred some of the brickwork outside of the theater, was extinguished within 30 minutes, Pisani said, adding that there were no injuries. Port Residents Reminded About Holiday Hazards

Electrical overloads, candles are among the dangers.

Fire experts are reminding Port Washington residents to be extra careful about the hazards the holiday season can bring. “This holiday season, some homeowners will use older electric light strands with frayed wiring or broken bulbs, or bring dry Christmas trees into their homes,” said chief instructor John Murray of the Nassau Firefighters Museum & Education Center. “These are all fire hazards, and during this time of year, we tend to see an increase in the number of house fires.  We urge homeowners to use caution and observe basic safety tips to ensure that these remain truly happy holidays.” Among their safety tips are:

Electrical Fire Damages Two Buildings

No one was injured in Manhasset blaze along Port Washington Blvd. late Wednesday.

The site is home to The Art Guild at Elderfields Preserve. According to Port Washington Fire Department Chief Geoffrey Cole, the cause of the fire seemed to be separate electrical fires in each building at about 8:50 p.m. He added that the Nassau County Fire Marshall will be at the site Thursday to investigate. No one was in the building at the time, Cole said. The Port Washington, Roslyn and Manhasset-Lakeville fire departments responded to this incident; it took one hour to put the blaze out. Police, Fire Officials: Stay Safe This Holiday Weekend

DWI enforcement and fireworks safety remain major issues this Fourth of July weekend.

This Independence Day weekend, the Nassau County Police Department will participate in a New York State "STOP-DWI" grant that will allocate additional police officers to conduct an extensive DWI enforcement initiative. The same goes for the Port Washington Police District, which will have extra patrols out around town all weekend. "There will be additional enforcement on this very busy holiday weekend," said Deputy Chief Ronald DeMeo, "The Port Washington Police District will have a zero tolerance policy on drinking and driving." Another issue this holiday weekend is the illegal use of fireworks, according to DeMeo. "Fireworks are illegal in the State of New York and many accidents occur on these holiday weekends," DeMeo said. Port …

Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers Now Qualify for More Affordable Health Insurance

This law which allows volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to receive health services and insurance from local municipalities takes effect immediately.

Important legislation that will allow municipalities to extend health services and insurance to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers has been signed into law. "This is good legislation that will help the brave men and women who help keep our neighborhoods safe," Senator Craig M. Johnson (D-Port Washington) said. "This bill will help give many first responders the piece of mind to continue with this dangerous and selfless work." The bill (S.5111), which passed the Senate in February, will allow volunteers — many of whom are without insurance or paying very expensive premiums — to receive affordable coverage through their municipality, including those local governmental entities offering their employers health insurance through the …

Quick Response, Quick Thinking Put Out House Fire

No one injured in Sunset Lane house fire on Thursday afternoon in Port Washington.

The Port Washington Fire Department responded to a general alarm fire on Thursday afternoon at 6 Sunset Lane. The fire was extinguished in approximately 10 minutes, according to PWFD Chief Thomas McDonough who said the homeowner's daughter aided in containing the blaze. "The homeowner's daughter did a great job by closing the door and containing it to one room," McDonough said. He added that the fire started in the den, most likely in a trash can, just after 4 p.m. The homeowner's daughter attempted to put out the fire herself, but when she couldn't, she closed the door of the room and got out of the house. Fire, Water Issues Discussed at Town Board Meeting

Resolution to allow area fire departments to use town-owned boats could affect public safety in the Long Island Sound surrounding Port Washington.

A resolution to allow area fire departments, including those in the Port Washington Fire District (PWFD), to use town-owned boats was a hot topic at this week's Town of North Hempstead's Board of Trustees meeting. The details of the arrangement have not yet been finalized, but a representative of the PWFD, Chief Thomas McDonough, addressed the board about how this could affect and potentially enhance public safety in the Long Island Sound region. McDonough said he was supportive of the general concept — an increased cooperation between the department and the Bay Constable — but he also stressed the importance of clarifying everybody's responsibilities in an emergency. "The job description of the Bay Constable does not include firefighting…
