One man in particular lets his voice be heard loud and clear Tuesday night.
The Port Washington Board of Education meeting lasted three hours Tuesday night in the Schreiber High School auditorium, and residents wanting to be heard waited for an opportunity to speak. Resident Hank Ratner claimed he hadn't heard the board open community comments earlier. He was irate about approved raises for the three assistant superintendents. “I’d like to poll the board, beginning with seat number one,” Ratner said. “Seat number one, did you vote yes or no on the raises for the three assistant superintendents?” No answer. “Seat number two, did you vote yes or no on the raises for the three assistant superintendents?" Ratner asked again, with no answer. This continued on down the line of the six seated board members — none of whom…

The board and audience members listened to two presentations on a long Tuesday evening.
The Port Washington Board of Education met Tuesday night at Schreiber High School for a three-hour meeting that included — aside from regular business — presentations from the Pupil Personnel Services and the Art Department. After the first presentation on special education from Mehri Fryzel, Sheri Suzzan, director of creative arts, gave her presentation on the importance of creating, participating and performing in the arts. Suzzan started her presentation by saying, “We believe in the value of the Arts as the voice of the human spirit; past, present and future…We believe that every child has the right to expect an education rich in knowledge of the arts.” The New York State Standards for Art Education are composed of four standards; …

Guidance counselors provide students with critical services, parents say.
The prospect of a school district with 2.5 fewer guidance counselors and 2.5 fewer librarians does not sit well with some members of the Port Washington community. They made their sentiments known at a Board of Education meeting Wednesday evening at the Weber Middle School auditorium, where a big focus was the 2011-12 budget, on which voters will ultimately have their say at the polls on May 17. Adopted at the April 12 board meeting, the budget includes $130,861,023 in spending, which is a 2.96 percent increase over the current budget, with a tax levy increase of about 3.95 percent. Cutting the library and guidance counselor positions would save the district $497,090. Yet despite those projected savings, community members unhappy about …

For his safety technology invention, this Port Washington resident is presented with the award at North Hempstead Town Hall.
The Hometown Hero Award was presented to Seth Cirker on Friday morning at North Hempstead Town Hall. The founder and president of Port Washington-based SituCon Systems, Cirker invented a safety technology system, which at the push of a button, immediately alerts police when emergency assistance is needed. This patented technology is already used in Port Washington schools, at no cost to the district as part of a pilot program. In addition to notifying police authorities of an emergency, the program is also designed to protect privacy. Once school personnel issues an alert, the "eyelids" of the system's camera lens opens, so police at the dispatch center can see the scope of the emergency, along with the location, in real time. Otherwise, …

Presented by Mary Callahan, assistant superintendent for business, the board discussed their schools future.
The Port Washington Board of Education met on Tuesday night at Paul D. Schreiber High School to discuss potential cuts and savings for the district. For more than three hours, the Board studied projected numbers for the future, and heard from the community about best possible solutions. Before the budget discussions began, the Board welcomed the incoming Principal for Schreiber High School, Ira Pernick. Replacing interim principal Dr. Francis Banta, Pernick will begin his position on July 1. He has served as principal of Robert F. Kennedy Community High School for nine years, and is an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University. Pernick addressed the board and everyone in attendance: "Thank you to everyone on the board. After every …

Budget vote and trustee election will take place on Tuesday, May 18.
About 100 residents were on hand at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting to get a glimpse of the Port Washington Union Free School District's proposed 2010-11 budget. Those residents as well as registered voters throughout the district will have the chance to vote for or against it on May 18. After Assistant Superintendent of Business and District Clerk Mary Callahan outlined the budget increase of $2,452,677, a 1.97 percent increase from last year, and an expected 1.94 percent increase in the tax levy, the school board unanimously approved its operating budget of $127,093,245 for the 2010-11 school year. Callahan explained that it is only assumed that the tax levy will be 1.94 because the board does not yet know what aid, if any, the …

Port residents weigh in on proposed budget at this week's school board meeting.
The Port Washington Board of Education yet again lowered the district's proposed 2010-11 budget — from a 2.52 percent increase to 1.97 percent increase — but many in attendance at this week's board meeting, including the trustees themselves remain concerned about the continuing cuts. "Lately, I have been stopped, called and e-mailed about the proposed budget cuts," said board president Karen Sloan while addressing the more than 100 Port Washington residents in the crowded auditorium at Schreiber High School prior to the meeting. "Many feel that it's too much. We have to find a balance between our standards of education and the taxpayers." As it currently stands, the proposed budget has once again been decreased, since the board's March 9 …

Battle of the Bands raises money for the Port Washington Education Foundation.
The gauzy guitar licks of Eric Clapton's "Mainline Florida" set the night of music in motion. As the Polish American Hall filled with the sound of classic rock, Port residents turned out in droves for the Port Washington Education Foundation (PWEF) and its Battle of the Bands fundraiser last Saturday night. The PWEF is a community organization that provides grants for innovative educational projects in the Port Washington Union Free School District. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in grants throughout the district's seven schools. "The foundation raises money for school projects that are not part of the school budget," said Amy Bass, PWEF founding member and now President Emerita. "And it's more …
