Fashion Boutique Suite 275 Wears a Winning Look

The shop wins the latest Golden Storefront Award.

Just two months after opening its doors on Lower Main Street, selling trendy looks at recession-friendly prices, fashion emporium Suite 275 is sporting an accessory money can’t buy: a Golden Storefront Award.  The beautification award, a joint effort of civic groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District, is given each month to a local business or entity selected by the voting public. Suite 275 may be new on the Port Washington retail scene, but it offers something decidedly old-fashioned: price tags in the double-digits, with virtually every item in the expansive shop retailing for under $100. “It fits a niche that had disappeared in the last 20 years,” said Roy Smitheimer, …

Alper’s True Value Hardware Wins Beautification Award during its Centennial Year

Longevity and looks: Alper’s True Value Hardware has dual reasons to celebrate this May. The hardware store, a Port Washington mainstay since 1911, is the most recent recipient of the Golden Storefront Award, a joint beautification award by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the B.I.D. This just days before an official street designation by the Town of North Hempstead on Saturday May 14, as the corner of Irma Avenue and Main Street, where the store is located, becomes “Alper’s Corner” to mark its centennial anniversary.  “It feels great,” said Doris Novick of the attention the store is garnering. Novick and her sister Sheryl Cohen own and operate Alper’s along with husbands Mark Novick and Lew Cohen. The store was opened by…

Green Thumb Goes Gold

Florist S.F. Falconer wins July Golden Storefront Award.

Cascading flower baskets and blooming planters festoon the sidewalk in front of florist S.F. Falconer, transforming part of South Maryland Avenue into a blossom-filled stretch. Look closely: the flowers are red, white and blue, the planters punctuated with American flags.  "It's Americana," said Fred Falconer, the shop's owner and an interior plantscape designer, who changes the outdoor themes seasonally. The patriotic plantings echo the shop window's décor, featuring  bunting and paper lanterns bedecked with stars and stripes. Flowers from Falconer have adorned Port Washington porches and vases for 86 years. Now the shop boasts its own new decoration: the gilt-framed Golden Storefront Award, awarded monthly by community groups Residents …

Sweet! Bakery & Café Wins Golden Storefront Award

The Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café offers an inviting patio along with tarts and scones.

Luscious tarts, cupcakes and mouthwatering baked goods aren't the only eye-candy at the Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café in Port Washington. The shady, attractive sidewalk patio is as welcoming on a hot day as the icy lemonade for sale. Settle in at one of the elegant wrought-iron bistro sets under a capacious market umbrella. It feels as inviting as it looks. While the good eats keep the outdoor tables filled, it's the good looks that won the café the June Golden Storefront Award, a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). "We hope that Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café will keep up the excellent work, and that the bestowal of this award …

Paint It Gold for Painting with Flowers

The home décor emporium wins April's "Golden Storefront" award.

Long a Main Street mecca for beautiful home décor and lifestyle gifts, Painting with Flowers garners the April "Golden Storefront" Award for its winning curb appeal. Store owner Gayle Silver said she creates inviting window displays every two months and changes the outdoor décor seasonally. Topiaries and wreathes festoon the store entrance while window boxes bloom with carefully tended seasonal flowers and plants. "Our store is about beautifying your home," Silver said. "We extend that philosophy to the curb appeal of the store." The Golden Storefront Award is a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID).  "Gayle just put a fresh …

Louie’s: Good as Gold

The Oyster Bar & Grille wins “Golden Storefront” award for February.

The picture perfect views from Louie's Oyster Bar & Grille aren't just of scenic Manhasset Bay. The street-side view of the iconic waterfront restaurant is winning raves from Port Washington residents who voted it a "Golden Storefront" winner for February. The Golden Storefront Award is a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). Louie's may be "Good as Gold - but just on the OUTSIDE. Three weeks ago we ate there and were seated upstairs. Service was just terrible. The wait staff was like a skit from SNL. Describing dishes as having good “stuff” on the side in the sauce. The food was barely OK. It was really bad service. Last week we returned, to use a credit for a dinner my birthday. Who can’t pass up a freebie? Bad …   more ›
