Question of The Day: Milestones

Do you like that the Gambol and Graduation are on the same day?

For parents of graduating seniors, Friday was a day to remember. By morning, they cheered on the class of 2011 during the commencement exercises. By midday, many ushered friends and relatives to nearby lunches for a celebratory lunch. By late afternoon they tended to pre-Gambol details – the flowers, hair and makeup, photos and more. Some say it's too much to pack into one day. Others are happy to devote one day to enjoy the big milestones, especially when friends and family are in town to participate.  What do you think? Too many milestones for one day? Or perfect as is.

Question of The Day: Graduation

What advice do you have for the Class of 2011?

As the Schreiber High School Class of 2011 graduates, all thoughts turn to the road ahead. What advice do you have for this promising group of young men and woman as they look to their future?

Class of 2011 Reminiscences

Schreiber commencement speaker and classmates reflect on their four years at the high school.

Friday's graduation marks the end of the high school careers of some 355 Paul D. Schreiber seniors. Representing the Class of 2011 at the culmination ceremonies are seniors Jeremy Eule and Olivia Shendell. Shendell will sing the national anthem and Eule will deliver the commencement address. Each was chosen through a rigorous selection process by a panel of Schreiber students and faculty. Here, Eule and fellow classmates reflect on their time at Schreiber and comment on what they will remember the most. For most students, high school is a point in life where they begin to truly express themselves. Eule was no exception. “I had a great Schreiber experience, where I felt like I learned a lot with regards to educational topics, but also …

Martins: Graduation Wishes

State Sen. Jack Martins offers well wishes to graduates.

Like so many of you at this time of year, I recently had the pleasure of watching one of my own children graduate from middle school.  The auditorium was awash with the pure, unadulterated excitement of students, parents and even their teachers.  As I sat quietly wondering where the years had gone, I got to thinking about this phenomenon.  Exactly what were the ingredients of this energy?  Was it pride in accomplishment? Was it a sense of relief?  Or was it simply the prospect of summer vacation?  While I think all of these things played a role, the conversations throughout the room made it clear.  The reason was hope. Every person in that room felt it.  The students sensed they were finally on the road, looking forward to what their …

Not only that, Joann; it costs more to keep a single prisoner in jail than to educate a child. And Port Wash schools are approx. $26,000. per year. I think prison is upwards of $35,000 per year. Both costs are crazy and out of sight . The silent majority are really hurting now, but our elected officials keep giving away the store.   more ›

Insightful response and as the parent of a special ed student (not in a self-contained class) I generally agree. Happily, my son is moving on to college--no small accomplishment! As a student, my son worked hard, with support, to the best of his ability. As parents we were continually vigilant and strong advocates on his behalf, working with many wonderful teachers who supported him. However....…   more ›

Ready to Take on the World: Class of 2010 Graduates

Schreiber High School grads urged to participate fully in society and to become leaders.

Their journey began in September 1997 when the close to 400 children took their first step into kindergarten. On Friday, they became Paul D. Schreiber High School's graduating class of 2010. "Let's face it," Assistant Principal Julie Torres said to a wild ovation, "the Class of 2010 is the strongest, smartest, most talented, best looking ... simply the best! You don't know how proud you've made me." Principal John Lewis exhorted the graduates to take on the challenges the world faces and to reshape society for the better. Luke Record, in his commencement address, spoke of the passion for learning that he and his peers brought to Schreiber. More importantly, he shared some of the insight he has gained over the past four years. "The key to …

A Student's View: SHS Graduation and Gambol

The Class of 2010 has its graduation ceremony this morning and Gambol tonight, and everyone is filled with excitement.

The Class of 2010 will soon be yet another group of former Schreiber High School students. After graduation, the class will attend its Gambol for the final school-related function of these students' high school careers. Though the time leading up to graduation and Gambol is amazing and fun, a lot of stress is involved in the process as well. It seems that the girls usually have a few more issues than the boys, but everyone has to deal with something, including the parents. It all starts in the morning when the seniors arrive at Schreiber in their caps and gowns at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony starts on the track at 10:30 a.m. and usually lasts about two hours. The students line up with their friends and are seated in rows as they wait for their …

D.A. Rice: Allowing Underage Kids to Drink Alcohol This Prom and Graduation Season is a Crime

Nassau County District Attorney to appear in Social Host PSA to be shown in local movie theaters.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice is reminding parents of teenagers that, with prom and graduation season approaching, adults who provide alcohol to underage party guests will face criminal prosecution under the Nassau County Social Host law. "Don't worry about being the popular parent. Be the responsible one," Rice said. "There is no excuse, no explanation, and no reason to allow underage kids to drink alcohol in your home. Make the correct decision. Remember, parents who host lose the most." Rice will also appear in a public service announcement, produced by the Manhasset-based Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA), encouraging parents to be responsible. The PSAs will be shown at two Clearview movie theaters in Port …
