Fashion Boutique Suite 275 Wears a Winning Look

The shop wins the latest Golden Storefront Award.

Just two months after opening its doors on Lower Main Street, selling trendy looks at recession-friendly prices, fashion emporium Suite 275 is sporting an accessory money can’t buy: a Golden Storefront Award.  The beautification award, a joint effort of civic groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District, is given each month to a local business or entity selected by the voting public. Suite 275 may be new on the Port Washington retail scene, but it offers something decidedly old-fashioned: price tags in the double-digits, with virtually every item in the expansive shop retailing for under $100. “It fits a niche that had disappeared in the last 20 years,” said Roy Smitheimer, …

Alper’s True Value Hardware Wins Beautification Award during its Centennial Year

Longevity and looks: Alper’s True Value Hardware has dual reasons to celebrate this May. The hardware store, a Port Washington mainstay since 1911, is the most recent recipient of the Golden Storefront Award, a joint beautification award by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the B.I.D. This just days before an official street designation by the Town of North Hempstead on Saturday May 14, as the corner of Irma Avenue and Main Street, where the store is located, becomes “Alper’s Corner” to mark its centennial anniversary.  “It feels great,” said Doris Novick of the attention the store is garnering. Novick and her sister Sheryl Cohen own and operate Alper’s along with husbands Mark Novick and Lew Cohen. The store was opened by…

Gold Medal Market

Ayhan’s Mediterranean Marketplace wins August Golden Storefront Award.

Perched at the intersection of Main Street and Shore Road, Ayhan's Mediterranean Marketplace is a cornerstone of the Lower Main Street historic district. The distinctive white stucco and glass building, with its cobalt blue patio umbrellas and plantation shutters, conjures up a stateside slice of the Greek islands. The market anchors a triumvirate of Ayhan restaurants and acts as a gateway to Port Washington's Lower Main Street harbor area. It's a fitting locale for owner Ayhan Hassan, a native of Cyprus, the Mediterranean island at the crossroads of three continents. "We are the most visible corner in town," Hassan observed . "Lower Main Street is rejuvenating. We are becoming a Mecca for weekenders."  Hassan's postcard-worthy views and …

Sweet! Bakery & Café Wins Golden Storefront Award

The Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café offers an inviting patio along with tarts and scones.

Luscious tarts, cupcakes and mouthwatering baked goods aren't the only eye-candy at the Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café in Port Washington. The shady, attractive sidewalk patio is as welcoming on a hot day as the icy lemonade for sale. Settle in at one of the elegant wrought-iron bistro sets under a capacious market umbrella. It feels as inviting as it looks. While the good eats keep the outdoor tables filled, it's the good looks that won the café the June Golden Storefront Award, a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). "We hope that Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café will keep up the excellent work, and that the bestowal of this award …

Gold Standard: Baltimore Design Center Offers Divine Design Inside and Out

The design firm garners May “Golden Storefront” award for its curb-appeal aesthetic.

Design destination Baltimore Design Center is all about aesthetics. The 12,000-square-foot showroom houses an extensive assortment of fashionable furnishings, serving as the hub of owner Keith Baltimore's design domain. Baltimore beautifies homes and commercial properties across New York and the U.S. and as far-flung as the Caribbean; he brings the same curator's eye and stylish sensibility to his storefront at 35 Main Street. For 11 years, Baltimore's design firm has brightened the corner of Main Street and South Maryland Avenue with colorful, artfully curated window vignettes. "I let the windows evolve," Baltimore said. "It's whimsy; whimsy and fun. Sometimes, I'm guided by a color or a theme. Sometimes, I get a great piece in from …

Rain Garden Project to Help Beautify Manorhaven

Manorhaven Rain Garden Project is initial step in making the village a more beautiful place to work and live.

Going green is good and the Village of Manorhaven intends to become even greener by beautifying the main streets of the village through better landscaping, upgraded drainage and improved lighting. "This project is on the cutting edge of what communities are doing to green-up their public space to attract business and pedestrians to their commercial areas," said Betty Stevens, president of the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (GPWBID). The Manorhaven Rain Garden Project, which is part of the New York State Main Street program, was presented to about 15 residents during an informational public discussion at Manorhaven Village Hall on Tuesday. The attendees took part in a presentation from the streetscape designers, RDA …

Louie’s: Good as Gold

The Oyster Bar & Grille wins “Golden Storefront” award for February.

The picture perfect views from Louie's Oyster Bar & Grille aren't just of scenic Manhasset Bay. The street-side view of the iconic waterfront restaurant is winning raves from Port Washington residents who voted it a "Golden Storefront" winner for February. The Golden Storefront Award is a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). "The Golden Storefront Award was established to thank and congratulate local business owners for providing a place that the Port Washington community wants to shop and or dine," said Roy Smitheimer, Executive Director of the BID. Louie's may be "Good as Gold - but just on the OUTSIDE. Three weeks ago we ate there and were seated upstairs. Service was just terrible. The wait staff was like a skit from SNL. Describing dishes as having good “stuff” on the side in the sauce. The food was barely OK. It was really bad service. Last week we returned, to use a credit for a dinner my birthday. Who can’t pass up a freebie? Bad …   more ›
