Tips to becoming an eco-friendly hybrid parent.
In our modern, suburban world, going 100 percent green is unrealistic. Going green can feel overwhelming, pricey and counterintuitive, for example, cleaning cloth diapers consumes water. Green awareness in our community is rising, particularly from efforts of the Town of North Hempstead and our schools. Fran Reid, Director of Environmental Planning, says the "Town of North Hempstead won the New York State Environmental Conservation Excellence award for its School Partnership Recycling program, and is introducing new green initiatives for residents and the schools.” Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Gordon added that our school district “transitioned to all green cleaning agents and is a 100 percent green cleaning school.” As our schools …

News from the Town of North Hempstead.
Give the planet a boost by greening your yard work. Now you can put yard waste in eco-friendly bags, thanks to a new initiative by the Town of North Hempstead. These biodegradable leaf bags are intended to replace plastic bags, which do not completely break down into organic material when buried. Those who use the bags will be doing their part to ensure that yard waste stays out of landfills and instead transforms into rich compost that provides nutrients for the earth. “Introducing biodegradable leaf bags to the Town’s waste disposal stream may seem on the surface like an insignificant move, but in reality it could pay major dividends if everyone participates in the program,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman noted. Bags can be purchased for $2 for…

Port Washington's NPD Group purchases Solarbuzz, LLC.
With the increased demand from many consumers for more and more businesses to "go green," NPD Group, formerly known as National Purchase Diary, recently acquired the firm, Solarbuzz LLC, cementing its place in helping Port Washington and the world become a greener place. "This is a natural fit for us," said Tim Bush, NPD Group's general manager for analyst-based services, in reference to the acquisition. Solarbuzz LLC, which will keep its brand name, is an international solar energy market research and consulting company that will operate in conjunction with NPD Group's DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in flat panel display and electronics market research and consulting. Residents can learn about local green activities at the Port Goes Green Expo at Daly.
Port Washington students, families and residents can come out and learn about all the green happenings in the area at the Port Goes Green Expo event set for Thursday evening at Daly Elementary School. Residents will have the opportunity to visit with local organizations, groups and individuals and learn about the ongoing initiatives to make Port Washington a greener, healthier place. "There are so many people in this community who have made a difference," said Lisa Epstein, a parent volunteer and member of Daly's compact committee which is co-hosting the event along with Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington." We wanted to celebrate and highlight what they've done." The event will include representatives from Residents for a More …

When St. Patrick's Day falls on a weekday, many high school students decide to celebrate it not once but twice.
Sadly, St. Patrick's Day did not fall on a weekend this year, so many high school students celebrated it this past weekend. We went to themed parties at night and had a fun and eventful night or two. Students like myself went to Party City and bought tons of St. Patrick's Day accessories. We wore Irish-themed necklaces, bracelets, tattoos, hats, belts and even suspenders — everything green you could imagine was present. And it seemed like every kid that took part in these themed evenings was wearing some sort of green top. My friends and I decided to match with a cropped green T-shirt that had a white clover on the front, with a black or white skirt and heels. We had stickers and tons of necklaces with clovers to go along with our outfits…

Board of Trustees enacts Local Laws A and B which allow, with limitation, the installation of solar panels and wind turbines.
The Village of Flower Hill enacted two laws at its most recent Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night that continue its move towards going green. Both Local Law A (Solar Energy Collection Systems) and Local Law B (Wind Turbines) went into effect immediately and will affect all residents within the boundaries of Flower Hill, whether they live in the part of the village in Port Washington, Manhasset or Roslyn. The intent of both Local Law A and B is "to accommodate alternative and renewable forms of energy production within the village, while regulating the visual impacts of any such form," according to a document issued by the Village of Flower Hill at Monday's meeting. Flower Hill Code Enforcer Robert Rockelein said the enactment of …

Can someone tell me about the fields surrounding the schools...Are they still using harmful chemicals or did they switch to Organic and Natural products. We live close to one of the Elementary schools and would always see them putting down all the chemicals. We need to protect our children and our environment and make sure this isnt done any longer...I would really like an answer to this question…   more ›
