There are "ice girls" all over the league. If you think the Islanders are the only ones you are crazy. It is just a way for further promotion. They do serve a function at the games.   more ›

Fundraising Through Ice Skating

Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of CancerCare raises close to $2,000 through skating party fundraiser.

Hundreds of supporters showed up at the Port Washington Family Skating Center on Saturday evening to take part in a night of skating and fundraising for the Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of CancerCare. Residents skated the night away, bought donated baked goods and bid on auction items for CancerCare, a national non-profit organization that provides free, professional support services for anyone affected by cancer. P.W. Skating Center Has Something for Everyone

Local residents have enjoyed ice skating at indoor facility for nearly 30 years.

Whether it's snowing outside or the sun is shining bright, the Port Washington Skating Center has been serving the community for over 25 years, since Bryan Trottier, a retired Canadian-American professional hockey player, opened its doors in the 1980s. In 1993, the skating center was sold to Fred Nielsen who began to oversee all rink operations for recreational use. While Nielsen remains the head coordinator for the recreational and travel hockey teams, it is Nielsen's son, Kristian Nielsen, who has been the program director since 2005. The skating center has upwards of 30 instructors that coach ice hockey and hold private and full-class skating lessons. It also serves as the home to the championship-winning Long Island Edge hockey teams (…
