Girls Basketball: Port Washington 2011 Preview

Coach Dennis Trottier leads young but talented Vikings.

The Port Washington Vikings enter the 2011 season as one of the youngest teams in Conference AA II.  But that doesn't worry Coach Dennis Trottier who is entering his third season at Paul D. Schreiber High School.   "We are young athletic fighters whose goal is to be one of the top four teams in the conference and make the playoffs," Trottier pointed out. The words of the coach speak volumes but he also acknowledged that it will be a challenging journey with four freshman on the roster, and jumping up a conference from AA III. Key Players: Position Breakdown:  Trottier is relying on a crop of talented gritty freshman led by point guard Leonard. "We are going to ride her as long as we have to," said Trottier, who was impressed with her …

Girls Soccer: Look for Speed and Skill This Season

Goaltender Sara Marinelli  Position Breakdown: Although there isn't any one specific "star player" on the team, Emily Rosenthal's name will continuously be brought up throughout the season because of her knack for goal scoring. Last year, she managed to put nine soccer balls in the back of the net and only more is expected out of her this season. At the forward position, senior Ava Cotlowitz impressed with speed during the opening match against Valley Stream North. An underrated sophomore this season is going to be Brenna Betsch…

Port Washington Is Looking Strong in Field Hockey

Lady Vikings Lacrosse Leaves Mark on 2010 Season

Members of the Schreiber girls varsity lacrosse team rack up post-season awards.

Despite losing in the Nassau County Class A semifinals to the Farmingdale Lady Dalers, the Schreiber Lady Vikings lacrosse team has a lot to be proud of this season. The team went undefeated during the regular season and claimed the Conference III title — its first conference title in a decade. "I think they've exceeded our expectations and goals," Lady Vikings head coach Raquel Piraino said. "We were 2-12 and 3-13 in the two previous seasons, so when you go and turn that around to a 15-1-1 record you can't be anything but overly excited about the turnaround … We won our conference, which hasn't been done since 2000, and we haven't been to the semis in five years. As far as all the positives, that one loss is nothing compared to what we've…

Lady Vikings Lacrosse Loses in Class A Semifinal

Farmingdale’s big first half too much for Schreiber to overcome in county semis.

The fifth-seeded Schreiber Lady Vikings were 15-0-1 heading into Tuesday's semifinal matchup with the top-seeded Farmingdale Lady Dalers. But their dream season came to an end as Farmingdale took down the Lady Vikings by a score of 20-8. Junior captain Jackie Froccaro got things started with a goal just over a minute into the game to give Schreiber its only lead of the day at 1-0. But it was all down hill after Froccaro's goal. The Lady Dalers responded with an unbelievable 12 straight goals in 12 minutes of play, and led 15-2 at halftime. "We showed up in the second half," Schreiber head coach Raqual Piraino said after the Vikings' only loss this season. "I think they just capitalized off a lot of our mistakes in the first half." …

Lady Vikings Lacrosse Tops Oceanside in First Round

Sailors no match for well-balanced Schreiber attack and goalie Samantha Tilts.

The Schreiber Lady Vikings varsity lacrosse team improved to 15-0-1 on Wednesday and showed that they were more than ready for the playoffs by defeating the Oceanside Sailors, 17-10, at Oceanside High School. The playoff atmosphere was set by a large and raucous crowd and a very rough first half which saw the No. 4 seeded Sailors receive three separate yellow cards. The first half was as back-and-forth as it gets and featured four lead changes. Junior goalie Samantha Tilts made several key saves to keep the game close for fifth-seeded Schreiber, and junior captain Alexa Froccaro had three goals to end the half tied at 5. But two bad penalties, including a slash which injured sophomore sensation Christina Commons, gave the Lady Vikings a …

Schreiber Softball Falls in Season Finale

Plethora of errors do in Lady Vikings in tough loss in last game of the season.

The Lady Vikings dug too big of a hole for themselves in their final game of the regular season against the Great Neck South Rebels last Friday. Through the first four innings, the Lady Vikings trailed 12-3, thanks in part to seven fielding errors. Despite a valiant comeback, outscoring the Rebels, 7-1, in the final three innings, Schreiber fell, 13-10, to close outs its season. "Again one slipped by," coach Eric Sutz said. "We didn't seem ready and focused early on." Yet the Lady Vikings didn't give up without a fight. They loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs and pushed across two runs to get within three. But that's as close as Schreiber would get. "We failed to deliver the key hit again," Sutz said. "It was a tough way to end …

Girls Lacrosse Completes Undefeated Season

Lady Vikings’ quest for an undefeated season is complete after win over MacArthur.

"This is a big statement you girls made to the coaching staff and all of Nassau County by having an undefeated season," coach Raquel Piraino said in a post-game pep talk after her Lady Vikings defeated MacArthur, 24-10, on Wednesday. "Be proud of yourselves. We're ready for the playoffs." For 50 minutes, the Lady Vikings were having fun on the lacrosse field, lobbing long passes, playing great offense and, of course, keeping up their top-notch defense, led by goalie, junior Sam Tilts, who had 15 saves on the afternoon. "It feels good being undefeated," Tilts said. "I've worked really hard to improve and it's very confidence boosting. The team helps me out so much on the field, they're all very supportive." As they have all season long, the…

Girls Varsity Lacrosse Clinches Conference Title During Port Washington Lacrosse Day

Port lacrosse team's were on display during annual event, despite the rainy weather.

Schreiber's first opponent on Saturday's annual Port Washington Lacrosse Day was Mother Nature. Rain wiped out the day's first game — the girls junior varsity at 9:30 a.m. — and delayed the other three. But when the weather cleared, the Vikings and Lady Vikings took the field, the fans took their places, and the excitement began. The girls varsity team got underway shortly after noon, following a one-hour delay.  The Lady Vikings first score came in the first minute of the game, and they pounded Long Beach the rest of the way, running the score up to 14-2 by halftime. In the second half the teams played evenly, each scoring twice for a final score of 16-4. Alexa Froccaro scored seven times and had three assists, Jackie Froccaro had four …

Senior Emma Horowitz set the tone with a two-RBI single in the first and another in the second in her only two at-bats in the Lady Vikings' 20-8 win. "I was happy that I was able to contribute to the win," Horowitz said. "We knew that we could beat this team so we didn't want to play down to their level.
