LIRR Back to Normal for P.M. Rush

A lightning strike Thursday at Jamaica crippled the system; Problems now fixed for Friday Night commute.

The Long Island Rail Road expects a normal evening commute Friday following a lightning strike at Jamaica Station that crippled the system on Thursday evening. Signalling equipment was damaged by the lightning strike and, at one point, the entire system was unable to function through Jamaica. This afternoon, the railroad issued an apology and said it was launching a probe into the root causes of the problem. "We are working closely on identifying the root causes of the malfunctions with Ansaldo, the designer of the newly installed micro processing switch and signal equipment, the statement said. "In addition, the LIRR is retaining an outside consultant, Systra, to help in the review process, including the system's lightning protection, …

The conductors were not hiding. They were just counting their money (see Newsday’s “LIRR Paying by the Rules” – 9/18/2011). Just wondering how much this will cost us in LIRR work-rule penalty payments.   more ›

LIRR to Shut Down Saturday at Noon

Governor announces system-wide shutdown of MTA with hurricane near.

The Long Island Rail Road will come to a halt Saturday afternoon as Hurricane Irene begins to slam into the region. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) will institute a system-wide shutdown with trains and buses beginning their final runs starting around noon on Saturday.   The shutdown will include the LIRR, along with subways, buses, Metro-North Railroad and Access-A-Ride. "We are fully committed and we are preparing for the worst," Cuomo said. The LIRR cancelled some trains to the East End Friday to allow crews to prep and secure equipment before the storm hits. It may also be difficult to get off Long Island once the wind starts picking up. State officials said that if wind speeds exceed 60 …

Some Friday afternoon trains to the East End being cancelled so crews can prep and secure equipment.

The Long Island Rail Road is making some adjustments to its service in advance of Hurricane Irene, stating that crews need to secure and protect its equipment and infrastructure. "The LIRR is asking its customers to review their travel plans taking into consideration the impact of the storm," the website states. New LIRR Timetable to Start Monday, May 16

Check MTA site for specifics on your schedule.

The LIRR will switch to its summer schedule starting May 16 , which will stay in effect until September 11. The time changes also include a handful of warm weather track maintenance times, according to a statement from the MTA. The MTA said the bulk of the work is scheduled for off-peak periods, such as midday during the week and on weekends, to minimize the impact on most LIRR customers who used the railroad to get to work in the morning and back home at night. Projects include the painting of a bridge on the Port Washington branch, the installation of new railroad ties on the Main Line and Far Rockaway branches, the replacement of third rail, the resurfacing of switches on the Main Line and Atlantic branches and the installation new …

More LIRR Delays for PM Rush

EVENING UPDATE: More troubles Tuesday as repairs continue in East River tunnel; expect delays, packed trains.

Another afternoon of delays and packed trains await commuters on the Long Island Rail Road Tuesday. The LIRR will again operate a significantly reduced evening rush schedule of trains from Penn Station. Another 20 of the 87 trains normally operated out of Penn Station during the evening rush will be canceled and combined with other trains, the MTA said. Delays and crowded trains are likely on the two branches running through Hicksville, the Ronkonkoma branch (toward Bethpage and Melville) and the Port Jefferson branch (through Syosset and Huntington.) To check specific trains, check the MTA website. While eastbound trains from Penn Station are likely to be packed, the MTA says westbound service into Penn Station will terminate at Jamaica …

LIRR Opens Information Center on Track Plan

Discussion begins on how $36M project will impact service on the Port Washington branch.

Long Island Rail Road officials have opened a special Information Center at the Great Neck LIRR Station for riders to learn how the proposed $36 million Colonial Road Improvement Project will impact service on the Port Washington Branch. The move comes amid concerns from residents about the expansion of an existing pocket bridge replacement, which they say will bring noise to their residences and lower property values. LIRR president Helena Williams, and elected officials, gathered on Monday to  open the center, which features diagrams, videos and artist renditions regarding the project. “It is very important that we get community input,” Williams said, suggesting that residents use the comment card box inside the center to address their …
