Do we maximize our advantage as a waterfront community?
For many of us, Manhasset Bay serves as a backdrop to our everyday. Whether we're dropping children off at school, grocery shopping, or even heading out of town the water is a part of our landscape. Yet recreationally, and even educationally, do we as a community take full advantage of one our best resources? Why or why not? What suggestions do you have to maximize the community's benefit of the bay?

Thanks CuriousMom for understanding my point. Some people tend to get a bit testy when someone speaks about certain issues. I make it my business to find out what is going on in and around Port Washington now. I have seen things take place by our local government as well as the private sector after the fact. So to Sally, NO I DON'T NEED OR WANT A PERSONAL ENGRAVED INVITATION.   more ›
Enjoying Port Washington's best resource, and yes, these folks are standing on water.
Nothing says summer like an evening on Manhasset Bay. Here, you can sail, cruise or – if you have the balance –walk on water, thanks to a relatively new sport, paddle boarding. Here's a look in photos.
A report on what's biting, where.
Another weekend for mediocre weather….which makes for good fishing. Light winds, clear skies, and warm air temperatures last week have raised water temperatures into the mid-50s in the sound and high 50s to low 60s in the bay. The increase in water temperature has improved the fishing with reports of large stripers around Hempstead Harbor and the mouth of Manhasset Bay. Closer to the shore stripers have been chasing minnows in the shallows and along sea grass beds. I have heard a few reports of blue fish starting to make their appearance in the Western Sound. Once again you do not need to get a saltwater fishing license! The law required saltwater fisherman in New York State to get a license has been revoked. You can now fish again in…

Views, music and movies by the bay.
Sunset Park, by the Town Dock in Port Washington, is a great place to enjoy sunsets, count seagulls, look for big bridges and skyscrapers on the horizon and watch people tie up small boats. Free concerts, under the aegis of the Community Chest, are presented most Friday nights in the summer at the Sousa Band Shell, the Park’s main attraction. If you’re not into music, you can always come back another time and watch a movie when the park turns into an outdoor movie house, thanks to the sponsorships from organizations that include the Town of North Hempstead and the Residents for More Beautiful Port Washington. Most people are unaware that one of Port Washington’s special districts owns Sunset Park. The Port Washington Water Pollution …

The Twin Pines Kayak Club along with Councilman Fred Pollack discuss proposed Blueway Trail.
Mention greater access to Port Washington's waterways, and local kayakers seem to be all in favor. This was evident on Tuesday evening, when Twin Pines Kayak Club members and Councilman Fred Pollack met Tuesday at the Community Chest of Port Washington. In total, about 20 attended the meeting, eager to discuss a proposed Town of North Hempstead Blueway Trail, which would run from Hempstead Harbor to Manhasset Bay, leading into Little Neck Bay and include approximately 32 miles of coastline. "I am excited about this new trail for all the kayak members," said Robert Bloom, a kayak club member. A Blueway Trail is a water path, similar to a hiking trail that is developed with launch points, camping locations and points of interests for …
Developer still awaiting OK from Department of Environmental Conservation.
More than a decade has passed since Island Estates, a Ronkonkoma-based residential developer, signed a contract with Thypin Steel to buy the property on Manhasset Isle in order to build 96 brand new townhouses on Manhasset Bay. Yet the developer, on its website, still prominently features the project. Is there new activity? Not just yet. The Village of Manorhaven, for instance, has not heard from the developer in the last two years, according to a village spokesman. But residents may want to stay tuned. "It's definitely not dead," said Lennard Axinn, president of Island Estates. "The seller has some environmental cleanup obligations that have taken them so far 10 to 12 years and $3 million for what's really not a very serious problem. But …
The kayak run supports Community Chest of Port Washington.
Here's a chance to enjoy a great workout, explore Manhasset Bay and support local charities. It's the annual Manhasset Bay Kayak Run, and this year it will be held on Aug. 7 at 9 a.m at the Town Dock. Sponsored by the Community Chest of Port Washington, this outing is open to all, and it features check points along the way to qualify for prizes. Open to people of all skill levels, the kayak run is a family event, rather than a race. This year's course will be more than six miles, but there is no requirement to complete it. In fact, you can kayak as much as you like. The kayak run is limited to human powered kayaks of all sizes and shapes. Participant can bring their own or rent one at a reduced rate from Atlantic Outfitters. To sign up, …

What John Phllip Sousa might think of the legacy he left behind in Port.
Suppose one-time Sands Point resident John Philip Sousa could time-travel into present-day Port Washington on a Friday night in July. While we're at it, let's say he caught a concert at the band shell that carries his namesake. Would he be pleased? Mark Brenner seems to thinks so. Arguably, Brenner is the best person to ask in Port. For nearly a decade, he's directed Port Washington High School Summer Community Band, which performs at the John Philip Sousa Memorial Band Shell at Manhasset Bay every Friday night in July. "Our performers are an eclectic mix of students, graduates, music educators and those with a lifelong love of playing music," said Brenner, who also teaches band and AP Music Theory at Paul D. Schreiber High School. "Sousa …
