Lego by Design

Nathan Sawaya's Lego sculptures build excitement at Nassau County Museum of Art.

They are the building blocks of life – at least the life of any 6-year-old. Legos represent childhood creativity and fun at its most open-ended. But New York-based artist Nathan Sawaya takes child’s play and elevates it to an exhibition-worthy statement at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn.  The contemporary artist has five Lego set pieces featured at “Nathan Sawaya: Recent Works,” open now through March 18, 2012. Take “Strength of Spirit,” a 2-foot high hand with a red figure caught between its thumb and index finger. It’s austere and yet evocative. Contemporary Gallery Curator Elaine Berger discovered Sawaya’s work in a Chelsea gallery and immediately wanted them for the Roslyn museum. “I got so excited to have all of them,” …

Tiffany Lights Up Nassau Museum of Art

Museum exhibit 'The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany' highlight iconic glassmaker and Long Islander.

You know Tiffany from the sparkle of its jewelry or the magical way light passes through its trademark glass. The name just evokes light. Now you can see several influences at work in a new exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn: “The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany: Works from a Long Island Collection.” Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the son of Tiffany and Company founder Charles Louis Tiffany, was an accomplished painter who became a master glassmaker and founded Tiffany Studios.  “When Louis Comfort Tiffany talks about his art he really does talk about light-infused scenes,” Nassau County Museum of Art Director Dr. Karl Emil Willers said. The exhibit features 125 paintings from Tiffany, which are from a single Long …

Exhibit Brings Richard Avedon into Focus

Nassau County Museum of Art spotlights the fashion and celebrity photography of Richard Avedon.

Glamorous and candid, ghosts of 20th century celebrity stare back from the walls of the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, thanks to the photography exhibit: “Richard Avedon: Photographer of Influence.” Now on display through Sept. 4, the works span Avedon’s career, from intricate set pieces evoking high fashion to famous subjects stripped bare in searing portraits. Audrey Hepburn beams while Ezra Pound crackles. The contrast couldn’t be more profound. “He made great efforts to capture something of the personality and some insight into the character of the people he was photographing,” said NCMA Director Dr. Karl Emil Willers, who helped bring the Avedon photo exhibit east from the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Ariz. “…

Seems to me this initiative makes our community a more interesting place. I went to an informative free panel at the Port Library. There were many corporate sponsors as well. They said the festival got off to a good start for its first year. Should it succeed, an annual event like this would be good for our businesses and our communities.   more ›
