Look for a revamped boat ramp and brand new ball fields.
The crowds aren't flocking there yet, but when they do, visitors to North Hempstead Beach Park will notice some improvements. That includes a rebuild of the boat ramp and brand new Little League ball fields. The boat ramp "had seen better days," a North Hempstead spokesman said, adding that it should be completed in early summer. The town is spending roughly $400,000 on the project, and thanks to a grant from New York State Department of State, North Hempstead will be reimbursed $150,000. "Meanwhile, construction of the two brand new Little League ball fields is progressing," the spokesman said. The high demand for fields "is in great part the impetus for constructing the fields," he added. Approximate costs for this upgrade is $1 …

Here are some recent happenings in the Town.
Greek Festival The Town of North Hempstead's community service and public safety departments as well as Supervisor Jon Kaiman met with the people running the first Greek festival to offer their assistance. This festival will be on Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at North Hempstead Beach Park. Flu Shots The Town in conjunction with the North Shore LIJ Health System and the Nassau County Department of Health are offering a free swine flu shot for those at high risk. “It’s crucial that all these targeted groups recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention take advantage of this free program so as to protect themselves and their families against this virus,” Kaiman said in a statement. One of the locations that will be offering these …

A Long Island-based band plays current and classic rock cover tunes at North Hempstead Beach Park.
The rain may have postponed the Goldilocks Band from performing last Sunday at North Hempstead Beach Park for the Town of North Hempstead’s summer concert series, but the band got lucky with a gorgeous summer day Saturday afternoon when they performed over 20 songs for a mostly middle-aged to senior citizen crowd. Goldilocks, a primarily Long Island-based cover band, consists of lead vocalist Leslie Kohn, drummer Mike Kohn and two back-up guitarists/vocalists and plays current and classic rock tunes from the 30s and 40s to the 60s and 70s and recently even some Lady Gaga. “Mike [Kohn] was playing with a group and the girl left, so within a month of us meeting — and we’re also married — we started Goldilocks and the band is five years old…

The authentic cultural adventure drew crowds.
The Town of North Hempstead hosted its second annual Asian American Festival at North Hempstead Beach Park on Saturday, May 21. This cultural celebration drew an estimated 5,000 people, some from as far as New York City. This year's focus was India, China, Pakistan, Korea and Japan. Performance featured young Chinese American Lion Dancers, children singing "We Are The World," thunderous Korean and Japanese drums, as well as the sounds of a bamboo flute, a Japanese harp and centuries old Chinese musical instruments. Also on tap: Korean martial arts, acrobatics and a fashions show, traditional singers and dance ensembles as well as a Bollywood medley. “The second annual Asian American Festival marks a critical step forward in the Town…

Race to raise money for Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism.
The fifth annual Jack’s Run/Walk for Autism is set for Saturday, May 14. The 5K race, which raises money for the Nassau Suffolk Services for Autism – NSSA – starts at 9 a.m. with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park. “One in 70 children is affected with autism,” said Michael Miranda, a partner in Mineola-based law firm Miranda Sambursky Slone Sklarin Verveniotis, which is sponsoring the event. “When we got involved in this it was one in a hundred.” The walk was named after Miranda’s nephew Jack Miranda who is severely autistic and a student at the Martin C. Barell School, run by NSSA. “The race was started as an effort to raise awareness of autism,” Miranda said. “The NSSA provides wonderful services for …

Despite the rain throughout the morning on Saturday, there was a "beary" good turn out at this year's Polar Plunge. Even the inclement weather did not discourage these faithful supporters from attending this wacky event at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Starting at 9 a.m., close to 500 kids, teenagers and adults arrived in shorts, costumes, sweatshirts and raincoats, awaiting the "go ahead" to plunge into the 38-degree water. "I think it's something everyone should experience at one point in his or her life," said Ryan Lensman, a local college student from Manorhaven. "To see hundreds of people freezing around you and getting ready to jump into 40-degree water is really amazing, especially since we are all doing it for a …

I drove down to this Park on Saturday to inspect the new 1 million dollar ballfields. This place is a disgrace. With interest rates so low I would suggest to Supervisor Kaiman that he secure a 10 milllion dollar loan to repair the fishing pier and seawall on the north end of the park as well as the parking lot that was once the County property. I see we are allowing Huntington Coach School Buses …   more ›
