PWEF Education Support Center Pursues the Artist Within

Students visited by an author and a teacher.

This winter, the PWEF Education Support Center invited two guests to share their artistic passion and highlight the importance of the arts in our lives. Local author, Dan Paisner, and artist and retired Port teacher, Seth Ehrlich, shared an afternoon with the support center’s 40 third-graders talking art and encouraging each to pursue their artist within.  Paisner’s visit was timely, as the PWEF Support Center students are writing their own stories and crafting hand-made books. Paisner has co-authored or ghostwritten more than 50 books with well-known politicians, entertainers, athletes and business leaders as well as not-as-famous people who have very interesting stories too. He revealed the biggest secret about writing, noting it isn’t …

OPINION: Thank You for Bringing Dallas Brass Ensemble to Port

It was a day that students and their families will long remember, the author says.

I am writing to thank the Port Washington Education Foundation and the Port Washington School District, for their commitment to the arts.  On Wednesday, March 7, the Dallas Brass musical ensemble spent a full day at Schreiber High School offering clinics and student rehearsals for high school and middle school band students, as well as inspiring and engaging performances for band students from all five elementary schools. The day was capped with an incredible public concert – a fun, fast-paced and entertaining performance incorporating music spanning our country’s history, music from famous international composers, and contemporary pieces that had the entire audience dancing in (and out of) their seats.  This was a day that my three …

The project was made possible through grants from Port Washington Education Foundation and PW Green.

The upcoming weekend will be a busy one for Schreiber High School senior, Nicholas Deriu. Becoming an Eagle Scout Deiru, along with approximately 25 parent, student and scout volunteers will be installing an outdoor classroom at Guggenheim Preserve at the Guggenheim Elementary School property. The project will include a bench seating area to accomodate approximately 30 students and a speaker podium. Trails will also be refurbished. PWEF Grants Help Students in Port Washington

Grants are awarded to benefit students in all seven schools in the district.

This year, students in the Port Washington school district will glean lessons from way beyond the classroom. Music students from grades 4-12 will work with the Dallas Brass Band. At-risk and ESL students will be linking math ideas to real world-scenarios though a program called "Connecting Community to Curriculum." And there's more. All students in the district will learn in an outdoor classroom environment at a refurbished Guggenheim Preserve. And young elementary students attending Manorhaven Elementary School will have oppporunity to build cognitive, social and fine motor skill through a mobile Smart Table Interactive Learning Center. These programs and more are made possible through the Port Washington Education Foundation. Celebrating…

Beyond The Classroom: A Community Effort

Ellen Fox and her team of volunteers give third graders an educational boost.

They arrive at the Port Washington Public Library at about 3:20 p.m. on Tuesdays.  Forty-four local third graders ready for more than two hours of snacks, music, art – and yes, homework. These young students are part of the Port Washington Education Foundation Support Center. The afternoon might mirror some of the activities they do in elementary school, but that doesn’t seem to dampen the mood. If anything, the children appear eager to participate. Maybe it’s because they get the chance to meet with high schoolers, mentors who volunteer once a week to help with homework. Maybe it’s because they embark on the occasional guided adventure in the library, where there are new monthly art exhibits, and books and movies they can borrow. Or maybe…

From Frazzled to Unflappable in 2011

One overcommitted mom’s resolution to volunteer smarter.

Recently I told my husband that my New Year's resolution was to have more time. “How are you going to do that?” was his dubious reply. How indeed? Close scrutiny of my schedule revealed few opt-out activities. Abandoning household chores? Appealing, but unrealistic.  Saying no to the increasing number of paid work projects? Um, the post-holiday AmEx bill is akin to the amount of laundry my kids generate: staggering. True, tennis could go but a recent stint on the disabled list glaringly revealed that everyone is happier when mom punches-out for a bit. So what else? Volunteering.  Could volunteering go? A Dec. 1, 2010, New York Times article, “Frazzled Moms Push Back Against Volunteering” revealed that stressed-out moms are increasingly …

PWEF Awards Grants for School Programs

Nearly $60,000 in grants was awarded this year.

At a time of spiraling educational costs and shrinking budget increases, teachers are still tasked with the challenge of keeping coursework varied and interesting, all the while meeting state requirements. And while there's no shortage of ideas to inspire students, funding innovative programs can be problematic. That's why so many in the community value the support from Port Washington Education Foundation (PWEF). Since 2001, the the PWEF has supplied grants that supplied educational opportunities to students in the district. It held its 9th Grant Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Slade Performing Arts Center at Paul D. Schreiber High School. PWEF has awarded more than $475,000 for programs and projects throughout the last nine …
