LIPA Finishes Irene Restoration as New Rain Brings More Outages

More than 3,000 lose power with new rain.

The Long Island Power Authority wrapped up its major hurricane restoration job over the weekend and began a fresh new work week dealing with more power outages. The last of the 523,000 customers who lost power because of hurricane Irene had their juice turned back on sometime Monday, according to LIPA spokesman Mark Gross. But heavy rains moved into the area causing new outages. "Whenever a storm like this comes through with gusty winds and rain, you have outages," Gross said.   He added that the already saturated ground is causing more trees to topple onto wires. As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, LIPA was showing about 370 outages affecting more than 3,000 customers. The utility spokesman said the outages were scattered throughout Long Island, and …

LIPA: Most Outages Fixed by Friday

LIPA's Michael Hervey: Nearly 400,000 still without electricity on Long Island.

The Long Island Power Authority says it expects 95 percent of customers to have power restored by the end of the week, as nearly 400,000 remained in the dark on Monday. "Based on initial estimates, we expect that most of the large area outages will have power restored by Friday with some lingering localized small outages going into the weekend or early next week," LIPA Chief Operating Officer Michael Hervey said at a press briefing in Hicksville. The utility revised the total number of those who lost power as a result of Hurricane Irene upward to 523,000 customers and said about 24 percent -- or 125,000 -- have their power back. That leaves about 398,000 irked customers without power as of Monday morning, and Hervey hopes most of them will…

The worst part of not having power was not being able to take a shower. I was becoming depressed. Feeling clean can do a lot to lift one's soul. I hope everyone gets their power back soon.   more ›

Severe Weather Leaves Many in Port Without Power

Long Island Power Authority is reporting close to 600 power outages in the Port Washington area as of 6 p.m.

Severe weather this afternoon is still affecting Port Washington and its surrounding areas. As of 6 p.m., Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) was reporting more than 20,000 outages across Long Island and close to 600 in Port Washington. "We had about 560 outages [in the Port Washington area]," LIPA spokeswoman Vanessa Baird-Streeter said. "Due to severe thunderstorm activity, we are currently experiencing outages on Long Island, primarily in the Town of North Hempstead. We have held over crews and are adding additional manpower to address the outages. We have crews assessing the damage done by trees for downed power lines." Rainstorm Rips Through Port Washington

Storm leaves Port Washington wet, but power outages are almost non-existent.

Following the mid-March weekend rainstorm, many Port Washington residents thought the worst was behind them. With hundreds of blackouts in the community after that storm, the most recent downpour caused some damage of its own, but of the Long Island Power Authority's (LIPA) 473,553 Nassau County customers just 11 had reported outages as of 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 29. Of LIPA's 98,788 customers served in the Town of North Hempstead, there were only three reported outages — one in Sands Point, one in Flower Hill and one in Mineola. In Manorhaven on Oldwood Road between Orchard Beach Boulevard and West Drive, a tree was uprooted by the storm, blocking off the street this afternoon. Port Washington fire and police departments responded to …

Power Outage Numbers Continue to Decrease

LIPA officials said they expect power to be restored by Wednesday evening.

As of 3:30 p.m., just 265 out of 98,788 Town of North Hempstead Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) customers remained without electricity. In Port Washington, the power outage numbers continue to trickle toward zero with 51 combined in Port Washington, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, Sands Point and Flower Hill out of 13,568 customers. Baxter Estates remains unscathed with no outages out of its 556 LIPA customers. Terri Heiman, of Linwood Road in Manorhaven, said she finally got her power back last night, but isn't sure if everyone else in her neighborhood is out of the woods just yet. "I'm not sure if everyone did as there are some utility poles that are still crooked and a few police cars are still hanging out," she said. "The condos …

Storm Damage, Power Outages Remain Apparent

Only small number of Port Washington residents are still effected by aftermath of Saturday's storm.

Port Washington is almost in the clear after this weekend's storm, which left hundreds of residents without power and many roads blocked off due to fallen trees and power lines. As of 5 p.m., of the close to 1,000 Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) customers in the Town of North Hempstead still without power, just 105 are from Port Washington, Manorhaven or Sands Point. No outages are currently being reported in Baxter Estates or Port Washington North. LIPA along with the Port Washington fire and police departments as well as Nassau County Police are working together to fix the remaining power outages. "This has been the biggest impact to our North Hempstead system since 1992," said a LIPA representative during a conference call on Monday …

The Aftermath of the Storm

Saturday night's storm wreaked havoc in and around Port Washington.

In the midst of the storm on Saturday night, many Port Washington roads were closed due to flooding and many trees and power lines were taken out by the weather. The Port Washington portion of Manhasset Bay flooded into Mill Pond, closing off part of Shore Road, one of the main access roads in town. Multiple power lines and trees in the area came falling down or were in danger of falling, thus impeding access to many roads around town. Long Island Power Authority reported more than 121,000 customers without power as of 8 p.m. last night. The police presence was apparent throughout the evening, making sure that those drivers who decided to leave their homes were out of harm's way.
