North Hempstead Board Notebook: Women’s Roll of Honor and Meeting Notes

The latest news from the Town of North Hempstead.

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Town Clerk Leslie Gross announced the honorees for the 2012 May W. Newburger Women’s Roll of Honor. As chairperson, Gross chose this year’s theme as “To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and don’t worry about the darkness, for that is when the star shines brightest.” Since 1994, North Hempstead has held a Women’s History Month Breakfast to honor women who have made a contribution to their community, possess a special personal talent, or have accomplished a significant achievement through public or quiet work. This year’s breakfast will take place on Thursday, March 22, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Clubhouse at Harbor Links in Port Washington. No reservation…

TONH Offers Resources to Senior Citizens Without Power

Urges seniors, caregivers, family and friends to contact Project Independence through the town's 311 call center.

Power may not be restored until as late as Friday, according to the Long Island Power Authority. That uncertainty poses a real problem for some senior citizens, especially those who are homebound, whether by choice or not. For those seniors, the Town of North Hempstead is urging seniors, caregivers and family to contact the Town through its 311 call center. “We have our Department of Services for the Aging and Project Independence fully staffed with social workers to conduct a full assessment of their needs and then connect them with the appropriate agency,” said town spokesman Collin Nash. That resource comes as a relief to Chris Muth, who lives in Dolphin Green in Port Washington, which he says has been without power since Sunday 8 p.m. …

North Hempstead Notebook: Rugby and Health Chats

Here are some of the things happening around Town.

Rugby Team Starts The Town of North Hempstead recently introduced a co-ed American flag rugby program that takes places at Caemmerer Park in Albertson. This program is for children between kindergarten and 12th grade and has tournaments on Saturdays throughout July. “Introducing non-contact flag ruby to youngsters give them a life-long sport they can take with them anywhere in the world,” said Alan Whelan, the program’s founder and coordinator and the coach of the Long Island Colts in a statement. “In light of budgetary cuts, many schools are introducing ruby because it’s less expensive to outfit the kids in uniforms." Health Chats The Town is having the first of its ongoing series of "health chats" called How to Protect Your Assets on …
