Own That Ponytail, Work That Updo

Get your hair and face picture perfect for the Gambol and other summer events.

Once the perfect ensemble has been assembled for the Gambol, it's time to focus on completing the look with hair and makeup. Let's face it, a fabulously styled coif is a surefire way to distract from that one unwanted zit that always appears on the day of a big event. Breathe deeply, and keep these tips in mind when primping for the Gambol, weddings, parties and other events this summer. Much like the fashion trends for proms this season, which echo the glamour of old Hollywood, hair and makeup trends are no different. Sleek buns and chignons, softly styled curls a la Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth, and braided up-dos are all the rage this time of the year. This sentiment was seconded by Dominic Commisso of the C3 Salon. "The flat iron is…

Local Shops Gear Up for Gambol

The goal: Help last-minute shoppers prepare for prom.

Schreiber High School's Gambol is fast approaching on June 24. Yet prom-goers shopping last minute for this year’s event needn't spin into a tizzy trying to get ready for the big day. There are many hidden experts around Port Washington who specialize in outfitting fancy occasions. And they are ready to help. One such expert is Cecelia Renga of Time and Again, the consignment shop in Manorhaven. “Many Port Washingtonians are getting into the spirit of Old Hollywood, especially after celebrating the recent Gold Coast Film Festival, and that’s trickling over into prom season,” she said. Her corner shop features an extensive selection of vintage jewelry, gowns, and tuxedos.  “I’ve been able to sell a lot more hats than usual,” she noted, …

Letter to the Editor: The Schreiber Gambol

One parent speaks out about concerns and experiences of many parents at Gambol.

To the Editor: Well, I will certainly get a lot of "heat" for this, but am expressing honestly the remarks, concerns and experiences of many parents at Gambol. I speak from years of experience. I have put three children through Schreiber and each time experienced the same problems, concerns and stresses that many parents do at this function. My children graduated in 2000, 2002, and this year, 2010. None of the problems I will outline have ever been addressed by the school or its Gambol committees, yet I have heard them echoed throughout these years by many parents in the crowds, crushing to try to catch a view of their child as they enter the "red carpet, Hollywood style" Gambol entrance and its ensuing event. Only parents who pay a fee of…

Gambol: A Community Tradition for Schreiber Grads

Unlike most high school seniors across Long Island who participated in traditional proms this week, those who graduate from Schreiber High School take part in a tradition that's a little different. The Gambol, which first took place at Schrieber High School in 1952, has been a rite of passage for high school seniors in Port Washington for close to 60 years. Supported by fundraising events and donations from parents of Schreiber High School seniors as well as local businesses and residents, Castle Gould at the Sands Point Preserve was transformed to fit this year's theme, Illusion, for Gambol 2010. The public was invited to view the transformation on Friday before the seniors and their dates walked the red carpet and took part in an evening…

A Student's View: SHS Graduation and Gambol

The Class of 2010 has its graduation ceremony this morning and Gambol tonight, and everyone is filled with excitement.

The Class of 2010 will soon be yet another group of former Schreiber High School students. After graduation, the class will attend its Gambol for the final school-related function of these students' high school careers. Though the time leading up to graduation and Gambol is amazing and fun, a lot of stress is involved in the process as well. It seems that the girls usually have a few more issues than the boys, but everyone has to deal with something, including the parents. It all starts in the morning when the seniors arrive at Schreiber in their caps and gowns at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony starts on the track at 10:30 a.m. and usually lasts about two hours. The students line up with their friends and are seated in rows as they wait for their …

D.A. Rice: Allowing Underage Kids to Drink Alcohol This Prom and Graduation Season is a Crime

Nassau County District Attorney to appear in Social Host PSA to be shown in local movie theaters.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice is reminding parents of teenagers that, with prom and graduation season approaching, adults who provide alcohol to underage party guests will face criminal prosecution under the Nassau County Social Host law. "Don't worry about being the popular parent. Be the responsible one," Rice said. "There is no excuse, no explanation, and no reason to allow underage kids to drink alcohol in your home. Make the correct decision. Remember, parents who host lose the most." Rice will also appear in a public service announcement, produced by the Manhasset-based Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA), encouraging parents to be responsible. The PSAs will be shown at two Clearview movie theaters in Port …
