How many spots in Port Washington does your family enjoy, thanks to efforts spearheaded by Blumenfeld?
As highlighted Monday, the influences of Myron Blumenfeld resonate throughout town. This much was evident when he was honored by The Community Chest of Port Washington as Citizen of the Year. Walk along on Main Street, and you'll happen upon Blumenfeld Park. Strollers along Bay Walk – a portion of which was once a municipal parking lot – can enjoy the view of Manhasset Bay, thanks to the efforts of Blumenfeld and others. He is credited with planting most of the trees on Port Washington Boulevard, Main Street and Shore Road, according to Residents for A More Beautiful Port Washington, a group that he helped found. In working with Residents and other groups and individuals, Blumenfeld was a driving force in battling the building of an …

The big event made it easy for residents to celebrate Earth Day.
Port Washington's Main Street was spruced up on Saturday as volunteers showed some love to our community. The event – the Fourth Annual Clean Green Main Street Day – was spearheaded by the Town of North Hempstead and Residents For A More Beautiful Port Washington. Beginning at 9 a.m., volunteers were busy sweeping sidewalks, picking up litter, planting flowers and mulching tree beds. Residents also had a chance to learn more about North Hempstead's "Recycle The Rain" program, and the opportunity to purchase rain barrels at a reduced rate.

Momentum has started to create a rational plan for our commercial district, the trustees say.

While our name expresses our concern for the past, the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society wishes to make it known that we are also very much concerned with Port Washington's future. The coming of the railroad to Port Washington in June of 1898 transformed our then quiet hamlet into a vibrant transportation hub -- conveniently connecting a new and desirable living environment with New York City. The location of the train station on Main Street, then called Flower Hill Avenue, quickly encouraged the expansion of Port’s business district on that street from its original waterfront location on Manhasset Bay eastward to Port Washington Blvd. and beyond. This bustling commercial development also enhanced our community, making it all the more …

Residents are asked to share ideas on Nov. 17.
Port Washington citizens will have the chance to weigh in on an opportunity to create a new Main Street. The initiative stems from Residents for A More Beautiful Port Washington, along with the Town of North Hempstead and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District. Together, they are proposing a "model blocks" program along Main Street from from Port Washington Boulevard to Haven Avenue. It features upgrades to building facades and storefronts, new open spaces for pedestrian amenities, the opportunity for new mixed-use development, improved streetscape, and expanded off-street parking areas. "Our Main Street is frozen in time, circa 1950," said Dan Donatelli, at a recent press conference. Donatelli is co-president of …

The shop wins the latest Golden Storefront Award.
Just two months after opening its doors on Lower Main Street, selling trendy looks at recession-friendly prices, fashion emporium Suite 275 is sporting an accessory money can’t buy: a Golden Storefront Award. The beautification award, a joint effort of civic groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District, is given each month to a local business or entity selected by the voting public. Suite 275 may be new on the Port Washington retail scene, but it offers something decidedly old-fashioned: price tags in the double-digits, with virtually every item in the expansive shop retailing for under $100. “It fits a niche that had disappeared in the last 20 years,” said Roy Smitheimer, …

Alper’s True Value Hardware Wins Beautification Award during its Centennial Year
Longevity and looks: Alper’s True Value Hardware has dual reasons to celebrate this May. The hardware store, a Port Washington mainstay since 1911, is the most recent recipient of the Golden Storefront Award, a joint beautification award by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the B.I.D. This just days before an official street designation by the Town of North Hempstead on Saturday May 14, as the corner of Irma Avenue and Main Street, where the store is located, becomes “Alper’s Corner” to mark its centennial anniversary. “It feels great,” said Doris Novick of the attention the store is garnering. Novick and her sister Sheryl Cohen own and operate Alper’s along with husbands Mark Novick and Lew Cohen. The store was opened by…

Third grade students learn about the environment at Baxter Pond.
Third graders from the Port Washington Public Schools visited Baxter pond for a lesson in the environment on a recent Friday. This is an annual program created by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington. The program was facing funding cuts, but Astoria Federal Savings, which opened a branch in Port Washington, stepped up as sponsor. "We were thrilled to get involved with the program, especially as it ties in really perfectly with our education first initiative, which promotes life long learning by people of all ages," said Irene Ferrall, the bank's vice president and director of marketing communications. "We feel strongly that education and supporting education helps to strengthen a community." Nicholas Stirling, assistant …

New beautification project underway.
In July 2010, local residents fumed when 18 trees were removed in front of the shopping complex now called Port Commons Shopping Plaza. Yet on Monday, Musso LLC, the developer of the property, planted a new row of trees – the "Musushino" variety of the Zelkcova Serrata tree species, which flower in spring. Six new trees will be planted in the newly upgraded and reconfigured parking lot behind the plaza. In accordance with the recommendations from Residents for A More Beautiful Port Washington's Tree-1-1 program, the trees will be between 2.5-ince and 3-inch caliper. The programs offers a unified approach and protocol for the care of public trees on the peninsula, including their removal and replacements. Residents, which issued an …
