The Quest to Save North Hempstead's Main Streets

It takes a community, experts say.

New ideas have emerged in fighting the ongoing struggle of empty storefronts in North Hempstead. The ideas include ways to increase foot traffic, attract retailers, and involve the community in re-energizing Main Street. “It can’t be done by just the business community, or the civics, but all of us together – otherwise it doesn’t get done, said Roy Smitheimer, an economic development consultant with North Hempstead’s Business & Tourism Development Corporation. Smitheimer made these remarks at a downtown revitalization conference organized by North Hempstead’s BTDC on Friday, May 11. The conference featured town and state officials, experts on walkable communities and more. In most communities, coping with change is a challenge. Still, it …

Dear Adina, Let's not be naive here. She has skin in the game, otherwise she would not have been there, or taken time out of her day to present. If no one was paid, it just means not yet! This is more of the political "double speak" the residents are being sold on.   more ›

Alper’s True Value Hardware Wins Beautification Award during its Centennial Year

Longevity and looks: Alper’s True Value Hardware has dual reasons to celebrate this May. The hardware store, a Port Washington mainstay since 1911, is the most recent recipient of the Golden Storefront Award, a joint beautification award by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the B.I.D. This just days before an official street designation by the Town of North Hempstead on Saturday May 14, as the corner of Irma Avenue and Main Street, where the store is located, becomes “Alper’s Corner” to mark its centennial anniversary.  “It feels great,” said Doris Novick of the attention the store is garnering. Novick and her sister Sheryl Cohen own and operate Alper’s along with husbands Mark Novick and Lew Cohen. The store was opened by…

Turkish Delight: Tava Wins Beautification Award

The Mediterranean brasserie and burger bistro serves up curb appeal.

Diners in search of burgers or baba ganoush would do well to stroll through the welcoming doors of restaurant Tava, which serves up both Mediterranean cuisine and American diner fare with style and panache. Recently named "Best Turkish" restaurant by Long Island Pulse magazine, Tava's crisp red, black and gold façade has also garnered the merchant another prize: the latest Golden Storefront Award, bestowed by community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District. "Tava's elegant exterior has brightened up this stretch of middle Main Street for the past three years," said Mindy Germain, executive director of RFMBPW. "Tava helped anchor this area as a new 'restaurant …

Bank Bags Gold

Capital One Bank Wins Latest Golden Storefront Award

Banks are generally judged on rates, not good looks. Yet the attractive façade and well-groomed grounds of Port Washington's Capital One Bank has won the branch both starring roles in the bank's well-known "What's in Your Wallet" ad campaign and now a Golden Storefront Award. In the bank's ubiquitous ads, the branch at the corner of Port Washington Boulevard and Main Street is marked with a giant red push pin. Now the bank is distinguished by another marker: the latest Golden Storefront Award, bestowed by community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District. "This is actually the second beautification award we've given the bank," said Residents executive director …

Gold Medal Market

Ayhan’s Mediterranean Marketplace wins August Golden Storefront Award.

Perched at the intersection of Main Street and Shore Road, Ayhan's Mediterranean Marketplace is a cornerstone of the Lower Main Street historic district. The distinctive white stucco and glass building, with its cobalt blue patio umbrellas and plantation shutters, conjures up a stateside slice of the Greek islands. The market anchors a triumvirate of Ayhan restaurants and acts as a gateway to Port Washington's Lower Main Street harbor area. It's a fitting locale for owner Ayhan Hassan, a native of Cyprus, the Mediterranean island at the crossroads of three continents. "We are the most visible corner in town," Hassan observed . "Lower Main Street is rejuvenating. We are becoming a Mecca for weekenders."  Hassan's postcard-worthy views and …

Sweet! Bakery & Café Wins Golden Storefront Award

The Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café offers an inviting patio along with tarts and scones.

Luscious tarts, cupcakes and mouthwatering baked goods aren't the only eye-candy at the Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café in Port Washington. The shady, attractive sidewalk patio is as welcoming on a hot day as the icy lemonade for sale. Settle in at one of the elegant wrought-iron bistro sets under a capacious market umbrella. It feels as inviting as it looks. While the good eats keep the outdoor tables filled, it's the good looks that won the café the June Golden Storefront Award, a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). "We hope that Sweet Comfort Bakery & Café will keep up the excellent work, and that the bestowal of this award …

Mangano Listens to Local Leaders Concerns

Nassau County Executive takes a page from the listening-tour playbook and shares his vision for the county's future with Port civic and business leaders.

Four days after Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano declared in his first State of the County address that "listening to the concerns of residents is a hallmark of democracy," he invited a group of Port Washington civic and business leaders to air concerns and share their vision for the county's future. After opening the forum, held at the Port Washington Public Library, with a recap of the major themes of his State of the County address, including the urgent need for tax assessment reform, job creation and streamlined, cheaper government, the county executive turned the floor over to the more than 40 attendees.  "This is really about listening to you," Mangano said.  Pocketbook issues such as job creation, tax assessment reform and …

The Golden Storefront Award is a joint effort of community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Washington (RFMBPW) and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (BID). Louie's may be "Good as Gold - but just on the OUTSIDE. Three weeks ago we ate there and were seated upstairs. Service was just terrible. The wait staff was like a skit from SNL. Describing dishes as having good “stuff” on the side in the sauce. The food was barely OK. It was really bad service. Last week we returned, to use a credit for a dinner my birthday. Who can’t pass up a freebie? Bad …   more ›
