Razed Mansions of Sands Point, And Elsewhere
Lands End wasn't the only mansion torn down.
PWFD's Chief Cole says summer's end saw "one of, if not the busiest 10-day period" in the department's history.
For Port Washington Fire Department Chief Geoffrey P. Cole, safety always remains at the forefront. “The number of personnel that goes out the door, I want that to be the number that comes back,” he said. “The number of injuries usually reflects preparedness.” As he sat at his desk at fire department Headquarters, located on Port Washington Boulevard, Cole recalled the department’s busiest 10-day period in history, at least that anyone can remember. There was an undeniable passion as he spoke: this 10-day period was a record-breaking one full of of hurricane action, tornado warnings, fallen trees and working fires. And there was no doubt that the PWFD was well-prepared for every fire, fallen limb and emergency. The PWFD responded to 271 …

Historic mansion in great disprepair torn down.
Daisy would have been disappointed, and so is Port Washington. The so-called "Gatsby house," Lands End, built in 1896, was torn down April 16, 2011, marking the end of an era. Even though some say its connection as the model of Daisy Buchanan's house in the "The Great Gatsby" may have been exaggerated, there is no doubt that the demolition of this historic home has touched a local chord. "Lands End was a landmark for me in several ways," said Port resident Wil Tibby. "It represented a gilded era when things were simpler and clearer. It was an architectural beauty." Another local, Kathy Christie, reminisces about sailing Long Island Sound. Land's End was the first house she's spot returning after a day on the water, signaling she was home…

John- Thanks for enlightening those who weren't aware of the "Swope" era of Lands End. My late father Lionel Sokolov built our home at the top of the hill at #1 Hoffstots Lane in 1953 where I lived until graduating Port Washington High School in 1968. My folks befriended the Brandt family (Swopes daughter was Mrs. Brandt) who lived in the guest house on the estate and their daughter Mimi became …   more ›

You’ll find a slice of Gold Coast history, by visiting the Hempstead House, built by Howard Gould, and later the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim. You will also find Falaise, the former home of Harry Guggenheim and Alicia Patterson, founders of Newsday. But never mind the grandeur. Sands Point Preserve – home of the Gambol, and many a dinosaur exhibit – is the backdrop for memories steeped in local tradition for anyone born and bred in Port …
