Question Of The Day: High School Ranking

A U.S. News and World Report survey ranked Schreiber 32nd in New York State and 198th nationally. Did they get it right?

Schreiber High School is the 32nd best public school in New York State and 198th nationally, according to a survey  by U.S. News and World Report. Schreiber ranked 10th on Long Island, between Roslyn High School and Harborfields High School.  School Superintendant Dr. Geoffrey Gordon noted that unlike many other districts, Port Washington "placed as high" in an economically diverse community that has so many English as A Second Language students. Researchers used state proficiency standards and a determination of college readiness to make their selection.  Did the study get it right?  Did they rank the school too high or too low? Take our poll below and weigh in with your comments.

Since he has been superintendent, the ranking has decreassed, while neighboring schools increassed........what a …   more ›

Students who saw the message informed the school via Reportit.com, a service that helps administrators detect potential risk in their schools. According to the school district, which worked with the Port Washington Police District, the threat was "very general in nature" and "not deemed to be credible." In a message issued to parents on Tuesday morning, Principal Ira Pernick said the "entire school was thoroughly searched by school staff and …

Port Resident Complains About Superintendent Raises at Board Meeting

One man in particular lets his voice be heard loud and clear Tuesday night.

The Port Washington Board of Education meeting lasted three hours Tuesday night in the Schreiber High School auditorium, and residents wanting to be heard waited for an opportunity to speak. Resident Hank Ratner claimed he hadn't heard the board open community comments earlier. He was irate about approved raises for the three assistant superintendents. “I’d like to poll the board, beginning with seat number one,” Ratner said. “Seat number one, did you vote yes or no on the raises for the three assistant superintendents?” No answer. “Seat number two, did you vote yes or no on the raises for the three assistant superintendents?" Ratner asked again, with no answer. This continued on down the line of the six seated board members — none of whom…
