Lynbrook Defeats Port Washington in Softball

In a 14-0 win, Lynbrook dominates in this non-league game.

A casual softball competition of two non-rivals, the Port Washington Vikings and Lynbrook Owls, on Thursday swiftly turned into a blow-out victory for the Owls, 14-0. The game was stopped after five innings under the mercy rule at Lynbrook's Atlantic Avenue field. Heroes: Lynbrook starting pitcher Rebecca Tisdell allowed only one hit in her shutout to Port Washington third baseman Janice Havasy, who led off the second inning. The Vikings held Lynbrook to one hit in the bottom of the first inning. Turning Point: In the bottom of the second, the flood gates opened. Lynbrook's first baseman Kasey Keller led off with a walk. She advanced on two passed balls and scored on an error, the first of five runs — four unearned and one squeezed — that …

Schreiber Softball Falls in Season Finale

Plethora of errors do in Lady Vikings in tough loss in last game of the season.

The Lady Vikings dug too big of a hole for themselves in their final game of the regular season against the Great Neck South Rebels last Friday. Through the first four innings, the Lady Vikings trailed 12-3, thanks in part to seven fielding errors. Despite a valiant comeback, outscoring the Rebels, 7-1, in the final three innings, Schreiber fell, 13-10, to close outs its season. "Again one slipped by," coach Eric Sutz said. "We didn't seem ready and focused early on." Yet the Lady Vikings didn't give up without a fight. They loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs and pushed across two runs to get within three. But that's as close as Schreiber would get. "We failed to deliver the key hit again," Sutz said. "It was a tough way to end …

Schreiber Softball Wins Close One on Senior Day

Lady Vikings hold on for win against Freeport behind ace Danielle Leibowitz.

The Schreiber Lady Vikings (8-8 AA-IV, 9-8 overall) made it interesting Thursday afternoon, but held on for the 5-4 victory against Freeport on Senior Day. The Vikings scored runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to jump out to a 5-0 lead, and it was the team's seniors who led the way all afternoon. Senior Maria Gardella scored on a wild pitch in the second to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead. As the game moved on, seniors Emma Horowitz and Christina Mouradian, as well as freshman Sara Marinelli, drove in the other four runs for Schreiber. "It's exactly what you want," coach Eric Sutz said of his seniors. "It's what you want for them." Senior Danielle Leibowitz, who missed all of last season following elbow surgery on her non-…

Schreiber Softball Bounces Back With Big Win

Coming off two tough losses, the Lady Vikings top Hempstead for a three-game series sweep of the Tigers.

The outcome of this game wasn't in doubt very long as the Lady Vikings varsity softball team was dominant from the first inning on when they took on Hempstead on Tuesday. Senior Emma Horowitz set the tone with a two-RBI single in the first and another in the second in her only two at-bats in the Lady Vikings' 20-8 win. "I was happy that I was able to contribute to the win," Horowitz said. "We knew that we could beat this team so we didn't want to play down to their level. We played really well and up to the ability that we know we can play to." Junior Violet Lee had a big day as well, reaching base five times and scoring four runs. As a team, the Vikings drew 21 walks to go with its 10 hits. This win completed a three-game sweep of the …

Gone With The Wind: Schreiber Softball Falls to Colts

Baserunning, defensive gaffes key as Lady Vikings lose, 10-6, on road at Calhoun.

The winds were blowing strong at Calhoun High School on Thursday. So strong, in fact, they took the Schreiber win streak along with them. Done in by shaky defense and baserunning, the Lady Vikings fell to the Lady Colts at Calhoun, 10-6, in Conference III/IV crossover action. The loss dropped Schreiber to 5-7 while the win upped Calhoun's record to 5-7 as well. After getting two strong pitching performances from eighth-grader Alex Caprariello, ace Danielle Leibowitz returned to the mound for the Vikes. The senior righty was sharp early, as was the Schreiber offense, which had produced 29 runs the past two games. Center fielder Sara Marinelli stroked a two-run home run in the third, giving Schreiber the early lead, but Calhoun quickly …

Schreiber Softball Dominates Uniondale in Big Win

Lady Vikings win second straight behind strong pitching from Alex Caprariello.

Schreiber softball won its second straight game and swept the season series with Uniondale on Wednesday, defeating the Knights (3-9 Conference AA-IV) by a score of 10-1. The win puts the Lady Vikings (5-6 Conference AA-IV) in first place in the conference. Schreiber defeated Uniondale earlier in the season by the mercy rule, 12-0 in five innings, and Wednesday's game wasn't much different. The Lady Vikings went down 1-0 in the top of the first, but scored 10 unanswered runs as the game went on. Schreiber set the pace in the bottom half of the inning, drawing two straight walks which eventually came around to score to give them a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning. Schreiber continued to take advantage of several Uniondale errors and …

Lady Vikings Tame Tigers Again

Varsity softball crushes Hempstead as Alex Caprariello throws second no-no of season.

Sometimes, things are as they seem in sports. The Schreiber varsity softball team entered Saturday on a six-game losing streak, but about to face winless Hempstead, whom they crushed 22-0 earlier this year. Would the Lady Vikings take them lightly? Not a chance. For the second time, eighth-grader Alex Caprariello no-hit the Tigers, and Schreiber (4-6 Conference AA-IV, 5-6 overall) pounded out 15 hits, in a 19-2, mercy-shortened rout at Guggenheim Elementary School. The victory was Schreiber's first since beating Freeport more than two weeks ago. The only surprise on the day was that Hempstead (0-10 Conference AA-IV, 0-11 overall) actually led at one point, 1-0 after scoring on a passed ball in the opening inning. Things would pick up from …

Schreiber Softball's Future Learns From its Present

Kindergarteners through seventh-graders spent last Saturday learning fundamentals from JV and varsity players.

More than 150 girls who are potentially the future of Schreiber softball took part in last Saturday's 5th annual PYA Softball Saturday, a softball skills clinic for all ages at Lion's Field run by members of the Schreiber JV and varsity softball teams..  "We have one of the biggest softball programs in Nassau County," varsity coach Eric Sutz said. "The program is beneficial for not only the kids, but for the players and coaches as well." During the clinic, the kids were broken up by age group and rotated between four stations — fielding, hitting, pitching and outfield. "We try to involve the high school players as much as possible because they're great role models for the kids," Sutz said. "We're teaching the kids what the high school …

Schreiber Softball's Losing Streak Continues

Lady Vikings lose 6-3 to Bellmore JFK to extend losing streak to six games.

Since winning the first four games of the varsity softball season, the Lady Vikings have since dropped a half a dozen in a row. Their sixth straight loss came on Tuesday with a 6-3 loss to Bellmore JFK at Guggenheim Elementary School in a AA-III/IV crossover game. Cougars' starter Sam Finkel pitched seven strong innings while allowing just three runs on six hits and striking out 10 batters to lead Bellmore JFK (8-1 Conference AA-III, 8-2 overall) to its sixth straight win. Jessie Eiseman was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Carly Thea and Heather Hulkower each went 2-for-4. The Lady Vikings' (3-6 Conference AA-IV, 4-6 overall) sloppy defense helped get Bellmore JFK out to an early 4-0 lead. Pitcher Sara Marinelli, starting her first …

One and Done: Schreiber Softball Falls to Herricks

Herricks pitcher Justine Lopez throws one-hitter, drives in two runs as Lady Vikings fall.

Well, that didn't take long. In a crisp, one-hour, 10-minute game, the Lady Vikings varsity softball team only managed one hit in a 3-0 loss to Herricks, in Conference III/IV crossover action. It was the fifth straight loss for Schreiber (3-5 Conference III, 4-5 overall). Herricks improved to 5-4. Pitching duels equal speed, and that was the case in the early innings. Schreiber ace Danielle Leibowitz cut through the Herricks lineup the first time around, retiring the first 11 batters. The key? Improved defense, according to Schreiber coach Eric Sutz. "I felt it was the cleanest defensive game we played," Sutz said. "Sara Marinelli and Christina Mouradian at center field and shortstop had truly strong defensive games." Unfortunately, …
