The leaves are still on the trees but expect snow and rain this weekend as the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning. Are you prepared?

I usually finish up the leaf cleanup by the end of November. Then I get the snowblower ready. But most years I don't expect significant snow until January. December should be a time to put up Christmas lights and prepare for the bigday. (12/25).   more ›

LIPA Halfway To Restoring Power

Power company also increases number of severely damaged areas.

Long Island Power Authority officials reported Tuesday that they've completed power restoration to about half the customers who lost power as a result of hurricane. "We have approximately 270,000 customer outages remaining as of this morning ," LIPA chief Michael Hervey said at a morning press briefing. "This reflects over the last 24 hours we've restored about 124,000 customers." About 523,000 customers initially lost power because of the storm and the company upped the number of problem areas they've found. After completing about half of  their initial damage assessment on Monday, LIPA said they had found about 750 areas where there had been significant damage in the storm. They're now saying they've found 3,000 areas wtih significant …

How to Prepare for Hurricane Irene

Be completely informed and educated if this Category 3 storm hits your area.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, Hurricane Irene, a Category 3 storm, is expected to hit Long Island somewhere between Saturday night and Sunday morning, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and most likely, coastal flooding. Although Long Island hasn’t been hit by a serious hurricane since 1938, “[it] is one of the most vulnerable places in the nation,” Ken English, deputy director of the Long Island chapter of the American Red Cross said at a recent hurricane preparedness seminar. The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has a plan in place should a hurricane strike. Several areas of Nassau are located in a flood zone, more than likely residents will be instructed to take shelter inside their homes, while those located in coastal areas…

Rainstorm Rips Through Port Washington

Storm leaves Port Washington wet, but power outages are almost non-existent.

Following the mid-March weekend rainstorm, many Port Washington residents thought the worst was behind them. With hundreds of blackouts in the community after that storm, the most recent downpour caused some damage of its own, but of the Long Island Power Authority's (LIPA) 473,553 Nassau County customers just 11 had reported outages as of 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 29. Of LIPA's 98,788 customers served in the Town of North Hempstead, there were only three reported outages — one in Sands Point, one in Flower Hill and one in Mineola. In Manorhaven on Oldwood Road between Orchard Beach Boulevard and West Drive, a tree was uprooted by the storm, blocking off the street this afternoon. Port Washington fire and police departments responded to …

Storm Damage, Power Outages Remain Apparent

Only small number of Port Washington residents are still effected by aftermath of Saturday's storm.

Port Washington is almost in the clear after this weekend's storm, which left hundreds of residents without power and many roads blocked off due to fallen trees and power lines. As of 5 p.m., of the close to 1,000 Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) customers in the Town of North Hempstead still without power, just 105 are from Port Washington, Manorhaven or Sands Point. No outages are currently being reported in Baxter Estates or Port Washington North. LIPA along with the Port Washington fire and police departments as well as Nassau County Police are working together to fix the remaining power outages. "This has been the biggest impact to our North Hempstead system since 1992," said a LIPA representative during a conference call on Monday …

The Aftermath of the Storm

Saturday night's storm wreaked havoc in and around Port Washington.

In the midst of the storm on Saturday night, many Port Washington roads were closed due to flooding and many trees and power lines were taken out by the weather. The Port Washington portion of Manhasset Bay flooded into Mill Pond, closing off part of Shore Road, one of the main access roads in town. Multiple power lines and trees in the area came falling down or were in danger of falling, thus impeding access to many roads around town. Long Island Power Authority reported more than 121,000 customers without power as of 8 p.m. last night. The police presence was apparent throughout the evening, making sure that those drivers who decided to leave their homes were out of harm's way.
