Parents may want to deliver some universal messages before their children depart.

As parents rush around preparing their college-bound students for the big move away, they may have a gnawing feeling that they’ve forgotten something. The tuition bill is paid, the health insurance waiver form has been signed, the bedding picked out, the orientation attended…so what are they missing? Maybe in all the commotion parents have forgotten to communicate what’s on their mind to their child or maybe such a discussion just feels too awkward. Regardless of the reason it hasn’t happened, parents should take the time to convey their thoughts for their own peace of mind and well as for their children’s sense of security- and it can even be done in a writing. Although the parent/child relationship is very individual to the particular…

Not having any luck finding a summer job? Don't worry, you're not alone.
Have you been looking for a part-time job this summer to make some pocket money or fill up your schedule until school starts again in the fall? If so, you are by no means alone. Dozens of high school students and recent graduates have been scrambling to find summer placement, and many searches have been futile. Why is it so hard to find a minimum-wage, part-time job? Are employers simply not willing to hire students or are there just not any positions available? How can students even find out about available positions? Kaia de Bruin, a recent Schreiber High School graduate, is perplexed by the whole process. de Bruin stated, “Applying for summer jobs has been more of a hassle than applying for college, for me. Local businesses seem …

Artistic eighth-grade students displayed their artwork in several different mediums.
A creative flow spread through the halls of the Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School as 23 eighth-grade students displayed their artwork for all to see at the Weber Studio in Art Exhibit. Acrylics, oil paints, pastels, charcoal and pencil drawings were some of the different mediums used by the teen artists during the almost two-hour exhibit last Thursday evening. "I have been teaching here for 22 years and I always tell the students to explore many avenues of self-expression," said art teacher and event coordinator Ann Kopple. "You cannot go wrong when it is your own expression. I tell the artists to always be creative." According to Kopple, the eighth-grade Studio in Art program requires a portfolio for acceptance and only 23 students were …

As students returned from spring break this week, there was no down time as the third quarter came to an end today.
As many of you are aware, Schreiber High students returned to school following spring break this past Monday. Since school is back in session, the streets in town are no longer packed with kids as the students are back in class, dreaming about sandy beaches and sleeping in. Not only are most students upset and even mad to be back at school, but, more than anything, we are completely stressed out. You may wonder why are these students so stressed if they just got back to school? It could be because we have to try to remember everything we learned before break. Or because we got all those tests back that we took the day before break began. But most of all, it's because we had tons of tests and papers due this week as the third quarter came …

Student-athletes often don't go on vacation due to their commitment to varsity sports.
Spring break is here, and while some students are in the Bahamas taking in the sun on their dream vacation, student-athletes are at home preparing their next game. At Schreiber, as well as many other local high schools, it is frowned upon for varsity athletes to go on vacation while in season and some are even threatened with being benched if they do leave. I am not exactly sure what the circumstances are for other sports at Schreiber, but on the basketball and softball teams, which I am a part of, the coaches are pretty strict. As a senior, I'd like to be a kid and go away like everyone else, but I understand the consequences. During the fall season there are no week-long vacations, therefore you cannot be penalized, which is a good thing…

When St. Patrick's Day falls on a weekday, many high school students decide to celebrate it not once but twice.
Sadly, St. Patrick's Day did not fall on a weekend this year, so many high school students celebrated it this past weekend. We went to themed parties at night and had a fun and eventful night or two. Students like myself went to Party City and bought tons of St. Patrick's Day accessories. We wore Irish-themed necklaces, bracelets, tattoos, hats, belts and even suspenders — everything green you could imagine was present. And it seemed like every kid that took part in these themed evenings was wearing some sort of green top. My friends and I decided to match with a cropped green T-shirt that had a white clover on the front, with a black or white skirt and heels. We had stickers and tons of necklaces with clovers to go along with our outfits…

Schreiber senior reflects on the week off and looks toward heading back to school.
While some students headed to tropical destinations and others headed to the slopes, I stayed in the comfort of my Port Washington home. Though it doesn't seem like the dream vacation, I was able to keep myself occupied with a plethora of different activities this past week. At first I was bummed since my mom and sister were heading to Florida without me, but after finding out that one of my oldest friends from Maine was coming into town, I got out of my sad state. Although I was excited for my friend, Lauren Rague, to come in from Maine, the beginning of my vacation started off with a bit of a rough patch. My boyfriend, Lev Pinkus, left Valentine's Day morning for his annual ski trip, so while all of my friends were out with their …

What Schreiber students do on and think about the Hallmark holiday.
Valentine's Day ... is it really a holiday? To some high school students it is, but to others it's just another day on the calendar. Just like adults, some hate it and some love it. The ones who have that "special someone" to celebrate it with usually have the typical celebration: exchanging of gifts and going to dinner along with spending the evening together. While the ones who are alone will spend it with their friends who don't have anyone to spend the day with either. The ones that are lucky enough to have a Valentine probably prepared for the past couple of days and had a wonderful Sunday. Girls made cards and found that perfect little something for their boyfriends. Not something too expensive, but something that shows them that …

Snowstorm gives kids a chance to play all day.

As predicted, the snow came falling down as Tuesday turned into Wednesday and continues to come down this afternoon. With schools canceled due to the storm, which accumulated between six to 12 inches throughout Port Washington, the kids weren't at their bus stops this morning. Instead, they were outside in the snow, having snowball fights, sledding and helping shovel their driveways.

Schreiber students breach contract forcing administrators to call off Sports Night, leaving many in wonder.
Student drinking at parties has caused the cancellation of Blue and White Night, a longtime tradition at Schreiber High School. Principal John R. Lewis, in a letter sent home last Friday, said the drinking at parties and sleepovers was a breach of contract by students and their parents. "Consequently, the decision has been made to permanently cancel Blue and White Night effective immediately," Lewis's letter said. "We have discovered that there have been numerous gatherings, parties and sleepovers ... At those gatherings, alcohol has been standard fare." The decision to cancel the event, which dates back to 1946, came as a result of the administration's attempt to create a safe framework for those participating in Sports Night. To take …
