Readers Choice: Where to Go for St. Patrick's Day

Port Washington readers pick Sullivan's Quay to celebrate the holiday.

The Readers' Choice votes are in and Sullivan's Quay is the choice of the majority on where to spend St. Patrick's Day. The pub has been celebrating all week long. Saturday it will feature traditional Irish Music by “Two to Many” throughout the day. Irish step dancers from the Donny Golden School of Dance at will perform at 3 p.m. Readers’ Choice is a new weekly feature where we’re asking you – our readers – to tell us your top picks. Shaving The Way To Conquer Kid's Cancer

Port's St. Baldrick's Foundation scores thanks to dedicated volunteers.

Sullivan's Quay in Port Washington hosted the St. Baldrick's Foundation "Shaving The Way To Conquer Kid's Cancer" on Saturday, March 10. Shavees and their supporters showed up to raise awareness and funds for this cause dedicated to cancer research. Members of the Port Washington Fire Department, Manhasset Bay Sportsmen's Club and the community were the heros of the day as they showed solidarity with children who are undergoing chemotherapy and treatments.   Police Commissioner Dave Franklin, the emcee, reflected on the event. "I would like to thank all the donors and volunteers who helped make the day a success," he said. Port's St. Baldrick's Foundation Event Is Saturday

"Shaving the Way to A Cure" raise funds for life-saving research on childhood cancer.

This Saturday you may spot groups of people proudly walking around town with newly shaved heads. If so, chancea re they'd been at the St. Baldrick's Foundation event hosted by Sullivan's Quay to raise funds to find cures for childhood cancers so that survivors can enjoy long and healthy lives.  The St. Baldrick's Foundation funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any other organization except the U.S. government, according to its website.  In 2011, Port Washington raised $19,311, far exceeding its $5,000 goal. This year, Port Washington Police Commissioner Dave Franklin will serve as emcee and volunteers from the Port Washington Fire Department volunteers and Manhasset Bay Sportsmen's Club will return with their teams. Sullivan’s Quay in Port Washington hosted “Shaving the Way to a Cure,” a St. Baldrick's Foundation event to raise funds for childhood cancer research grants. The March 26 event raised $19,311 – far exceeding the $5,000 goal – according to the St. Baldrick’s website. Some came to the fundraising event to honor a child who is battling cancer or because the disease has touched their own families and friends. Talk about spanning the decades. Thursday offers a little Baroque and a little karaoke, plus a school tour, some politics and of course, Vikings.  1. Everything you wanted to know about Baroque master Caravaggio. Lecturer Thomas Germano will provide a visual presentation commemorating the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio's death. He was known "as the most revolutionary artist" of the Italian Baroque period. This exploration of his work will take place at the Port Washington Public Library at 3 p.m. 2. Relay for Life Boosts Visibility With Ad Campaign

Relay for Life ad campaign will feature local cancer survivors in photos around town.

Holding a smoke-tinged fire helmet, Brian Waterson, a 13-year veteran of the Port Washington Fire Department, posed on the dock at Louie's as a photographer snapped photo after photo. A cancer survivor, Waterson is one of the faces of an upcoming ad campaign for Port Washington's annual Relay for Life. The campaign features Port Washington cancer survivors, putting a local face on a global health crisis. Waterson, 31, missed a year of work battling testicular cancer with months of chemotherapy and three surgeries. "I wouldn't want to see anyone go through what I went through," Waterson said. "So if there is a way I can encourage people to catch cancer early, I'll do it." The ad campaign is set to run in the Port Washington News and on …

A St. Patty's Day Filled with Food, Dance and Music

Sullivan's Quay was the place to be in Port Washington on St. Patrick's Day.

As is every St. Patrick's Day, the streets and buildings around town were flooded with green and merry spirits. Sullivan's Quay hosted its annual week of St. Patrick's Day festivities leading up to the big day, and what a festive day it was. On St. Patrick's Day, Sullivan's Quay was packed with patrons wearing green who were given a real taste of what Ireland might be like on this holiday. And you better have made a reservation, or you would have been waiting quite some time for an open table. "I thought the entertainment was beautiful and wonderful," said Marilyn Butler Murphey who indulged in a delicious Irish meal with her mother Mary Bulter. Irish Step Dancing Provides Entertainment in Port

Students from The Donny Golden School of Irish Dance performed at Sullivan's Quay three times this week.

Students from The Donny Golden School of Irish Dance performed group numbers and solos at Sullivan's Quay this week as part of the bar and restaurant's week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration. Twenty students entertained the crowd with Irish step dancing to festive music during dinner time on Sunday and Monday and also preformed on St. Patrick's Day at 2 p.m. The dancers performed selections of reels, jigs, slip jigs, set dances and ceili dances.

A Musical Trip to Ireland in Port Washington

World-renowned Victor Cunneen helped kick off a week of St. Patrick's Day festivities at Sullivan's Quay.

Sullivan's Quay kicked off its St. Patrick's week celebration with a familiar face — world-renowned guitarist Victor Cunneen who performs at the Irish owned and operated bar and restaurant numerous times throughout the year. Cunneen performed Irish-themed music last Thursday and Friday evening in front of a packed house which included dinner guests and bar patrons. His Irish folk music filled the air with fantastic tunes that took many audience members on a musical trip to Ireland. Cunneen has been playing his guitar for 35 years across Europe and the United States and has been a regular performer at Sullivan's Quay for the past 10 years. Who Needs St. Patrick's Day When There's St. Patrick's Week?

Sullivan's Quay hosts week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Most of the Sullivan's Quay staff, including owner Brian Barry, are from Ireland. Although they are thousands of miles from home, Barry, who has recreated an upscale Irish pub on Port Washington Boulevard, wanted to make sure local residents get their "fill" for St. Patrick's Day. Instead of celebrating on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, Sullivan's Quay will be hosting a week-long St. Patrick's Day celebration, filled with live music, drink specials and authentic Irish entrees. World-renowned guitarist Victor Cunneen will be performing 7:30 p.m. on March 11 and March 12.
