Boys Track & Field to Rely on Youth Movement

Despite the loss of key seniors and the departure of long-time coach Jeremy Klaff, Schreiber boys track & field looks forward to a quality season.

When any new sports season begins, teams can face any number of challenges. Schreiber High School's boys track & field team is faced with the daunting task of trying to follow up a season where the squad finished second in its conference and fourth in all of Nassau County. On top of that, coach Jeremy Klaff will not be returning to the sidelines this season after nine seasons with the team. Klaff said he is proud of everything the team accomplished during his time with them, especially the tight-knit family appeal that has formed through the years. "I've coached the team since 2001, and it's been a great run," Klaff said. "Our team has grown in the last decade, as we have had individual county champions in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200, shot …

Top Teams, Top Conference Await Vikings Tennis

Varsity tennis team moves up to the county's top conference for the 2010 season.

The Schreiber boys varsity tennis team will face a whole host of challenges as it looks to mirror a championship performance in 2009 in the toughest conference in Nassau County. The Vikings moved up to Conference IA and will face the likes of Cold Spring Harbor, Jericho, Syosset, Great Neck North and Great Neck South a year after Schreiber handled Conference II-A with a 12-2 record. "It's going to be a challenging season," coach Melissa Koulouris said. "We play all the top programs." Koulouris took over the team the day before the season began, and will lean on nationally-ranked Jason Hubsher to anchor the attack. "He's a player to watch," Koulouris said of her top singles player. Hubsher said his backhand is his strength and he usually …

Big Squad Could Lead to Big Gains for Girls Track

Having close to 70 athletes should give girls track and field more flexibility at meets.

One can assume that most sports teams would love to have the problem that Schreiber High School's girls track and field team faces this season — a large, deep roster with a nice mix of upper and underclassmen — as close to 70 girls prepare for the spring season. "We're very excited about this season," Coach Virginia McMahon said. "We have a new track and a great turnout this year." Now in her fourth season as a member of the team, senior sprinter Stephanie Mejia said she has never seem a team with this many athletes. She explained that many returning team members are trying to teach the newcomers the workouts and at times it can become a bit confusing and frustrating. "Having almost 70 girls on the team is a bit overwhelming, but I'm …

Schreiber Girls Lacrosse Has High Hopes for Season

Varsity coaches and players say their goal is to win a conference title this year.

The Schreiber girls lacrosse team has put last season in the past and has set some lofty goals for this season. After finishing 3-13 last year, the Lady Vikings led by head coach Raquel Piraino and assistant coach Mary Romano have set the bar pretty high in 2010. "Our team goal this year is to win a conference championship," Piraino said. "I am so excited to see what happens in the upcoming season." Piraino said the team, which is composed of a nice mix of new and returning players, knows each other well both on and off the field. "They know what everyone's strengths and weakness's are," Piraino said. "That's how we will survive." The Lady Vikings are part of Conference III this season along with Seaford (at Schreiber on March 27), …

Lady Vikings Optimistic About Upcoming Season

Experience and healthy pitching could lead to conference contention this spring.

The temperatures are rising, the fields are thawing, and the bats and gloves have been unpacked. Spring season at Schreiber High School has arrived, and the softball team is preparing for the 2010 campaign. Coach Eric Sutz brings back an experienced group featuring eight returning players, and a ninth whose return could thrust the Lady Vikings to new heights. Pitcher Danielle Liebowitz returns for her senior season after missing all of 2009 with a broken, non-throwing elbow. Sutz said her return to the mound already puts the team miles ahead of where they were a year ago. "[Her injury] left us with nobody with any pitching experience at all," Sutz said. "We went into the season with nobody who'd ever pitched in a varsity or JV game. That …
