The Town of North Hempstead Gold Coast International Film Festival, which will be going on in parts of the town from June 1-5, is looking for volunteers. “Volunteers are going to be the key to ensuring a positive and successful Film Festival here in North Hempstead,” said Supervisor Jon Kaiman in a statement. “In addition to galvanizing local and regional audiences on the storied Gold Coast, the Film Festival will support industry by injecting much needed dollars into the local economy. North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, recently hosted its third annual job fair at the its headquarters on Davis Avenue. The event attracted a mix of well-qualified people hoping to land the perfect animal-oriented job. Claudia LaForest, a member of the Human Resources Department at NSALA who coordinated the fair, said she was enthusiastic about the event and the potential candidates it undoubtedly attracted. "We have a few members currently on staff who came to our last one," LaForest said. South Salem HSA raises more than $2,000 through its first annual Salem Garage Sale.
Last Saturday, the South Salem Elementary School HSA held its first annual Salem Garage Sale. Donations to the sale were made by families from every grade in the elementary school, and there were many parent and student volunteers working throughout the day to ensure that everything ran smoothly. "There was a fantastic turnout for the event and there were many satisfied customers," said Kate Hirsch, who coordinated the event. "We had a great turnout, a lot of families from Port Washington and many other towns found a lot of bargains." More than $2,000 was raised for the South Salem HSA through the garage sale, and the coinciding bake sale. North Shore Animal League America (NSALA) kick started its 10th Tour For Life cross-country adoption event last week as celebrities, volunteers, and pet lovers alike came to send off the mobile adoption units. Tour For Life, North Shore Animal League America's national initiative to save animal lives, is the world's largest cooperative mobile pet adoption event. For one month the Animal League's mobile adoption units will travel two cross-country routes, simultaneously, stopping at scheduled destinations in 28 cities in 17 states helping more than 100 shelters and rescue groups find homes for orphaned pets. Despite the rain throughout the morning on Saturday, there was a "beary" good turn out at this year's Polar Plunge. Even the inclement weather did not discourage these faithful supporters from attending this wacky event at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. Starting at 9 a.m., close to 500 kids, teenagers and adults arrived in shorts, costumes, sweatshirts and raincoats, awaiting the "go ahead" to plunge into the 38-degree water. Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of CancerCare raises close to $2,000 through skating party fundraiser.
Hundreds of supporters showed up at the Port Washington Family Skating Center on Saturday evening to take part in a night of skating and fundraising for the Port Washington-Manhasset Chapter of CancerCare. Residents skated the night away, bought donated baked goods and bid on auction items for CancerCare, a national non-profit organization that provides free, professional support services for anyone affected by cancer. Jamie Asuncion, one of the main event organizers and CancerCare board member, said the idea of having a skating party as a fundraiser was decided upon to allow people of all ages to participate.
