Weber Middle School's Science Olympiad team took first place in the 2012 Nassau County Regional Science Olympiad Competition on March 3. The school also hosted 44 middle schools for the competition. Next up for Weber's Olympiads: the New York State Competition in Stone Ridge in April. According to Weber's Home School Association, the school has taken first place in nine out of the last 11 years and has qualified for the state competition 14 years straight. It has also qualified for the National Competition in 2002, 2004 and 2007. Weber is the only middle school in Nassau County to ever qualify for the Nationals, the HSA reports.

The show runs Friday through Sunday.
This Friday through the Weber Middle School drama club will proudly present their annual musical production of: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The musical, which is told in a high-energy rock opera style (yes, that means hardly any speaking lines) was the first musical written by the dynamic team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. “Joseph” is based on the biblical story of “Joseph and his multicolored coat,” from the book of Genesis. The show shares the tale of how Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, is blessed with prophetic dreams. He is then sold into slavery by his conniving and jealous brothers, but is able to overcome his odds and achieve greatness. Joseph continually shares with the audience that dreams really can …

The School Board holds a night of discussion for residents.
The Port Washington School Board invited parents and community members to Weber Middle School for a community forum Tuesday. After board member Sandy Erlich welcomed residents to Weber, they broke off into three groups for the various forums – curriculum, technology and facilities. Board member Bob Ryan ran the facilities forum, along with Jim Ristano, director of facilities for the district, and James Weydig, district architect. Weber's auditorium was the perfect setting for a discussion about bettering the infrastructure of Port schools. "This auditorium is probably the most beautiful piece of public architecture in Port Washington, but unfortunately leaks like these can happen," Ryan said, pointing to the roof of Weber's auditorium, …

Administrator Kathleen Mooney receives tenure, the district receives an audit report, and the board looks to 2010-11.
At the Port Washington Board of Education meeting on Tuesday at Schreiber High School, Dr. Kathleen Mooney was unanimously awarded tenure, while the district announced that it received a positive report from auditors. In addition, the district is looking at budgetary needs for the 2010-11 academic year. Upon receiving tenure, Mooney, the assistant superintendent for human resources and general administration, was praised. "This is a tribute to the board who looks to send out positive messages, and they're sending out a tremendous message to the community by awarding Dr. Mooney tenure and I want to congratulate the board and Dr. Mooney," said Dr. Geoffrey Gordon, the district's superintendent. School Board President Karen Sloan echoed …

The Senior Citizen brunch was packed with Port Washington residents who were overjoyed with the spirit of the town.
As part of the Pride in Port festivities, the senior citizens and veterans were not forgotten. In the cafeteria of Schreiber High School, students danced for the local seniors and served them salad, turkey and mashed potatoes, juice, fruit and chocolate chip cookies. Attorney General nominee Eric Schneiderman and Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel were in attendance, shaking hands and chatting with many of the seniors at the luncheon. Seventy-five-year-old Port Washington resident Barbara Faticone reminisced about the first day Paul D. Schreiber High School opened it's doors in 1953. "We carried our chairs from the [Carrie Palmer Weber] Middle School up Campus Drive to do our homeroom here at the High School," she said. "The spirit was …

Members of Weber Middle School's eighth-grade baseball team shaved their heads to honor teammate who went through brain surgery.
Tragedy exists in life. There is no special formula to avoid it. And as in life, tragedy also exists in sports. But where there is tragedy, there is also chance, hope and miracles. When C.J. Tantillo, a member of the eighth-grade baseball team at Weber Middle School, was hit by a car back in February, his life was held in the balance. "It was a very upsetting thing," said Weber baseball coach Derek Novinski. "C.J. is a really, really good kid. We had him on the football team and he is just a wonderful young man. It was an unfortunate incident." The 14-year-old Tantillo was left with a broken femur, and severe brain swelling. Had it not been for the quick and resourceful actions of the Port Washington Police as well as the efforts of the …

Residents came out to see NTOR, made up of five Weber Middle School students, as they performed a free concert at Port Washington Public Library on Thursday night.
Before NTOR took the stage on Thursday night at the Port Washington Public Library, a couple of librarians walked into the event center while the band was doing its sound check. "They told us to keep it down," explained the band's 13-year-old lead singer Joe Panico, "so we made it louder." Natural born rockers. NTOR, an alternative electro-pop band made of up five Weber Middle School students, played an hour-long free concert, and left their fans who packed the library's event center wanting more. Fans, like 12-year-old Olivia Burwell, sang and danced along to familiar tunes, but were also happy to hear some new ones. "It was very creative," Burwell said of the band's performance. "Everyone loves them, and they were especially good …

Karen Sloan, William Hohauser and Bob Ryan elected to school board; residents also approve Prop 2, which grants the board the right to sell two unused pieces of property.
The almost-wintry weather did not keep Port Washington residents away from the polls on Tuesday, as they voted 2,880 to 2,102 in favor of passing the school budget for the 2010-11 school year at $127,093,245. "I'm very grateful that the community chose to support the balance of educational excellence and soaring student achievement, with careful and prudent fiscal responsibility," Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Gordon said about the results. Three Board of Ed seats were decided on as well on Tuesday with current board president Karen Sloan receiving 3,057 votes, fellow trustee William Hohauser garnering 2,818 votes, and Bob Ryan was elected with 3,137 votes. Joe Mirzoeff, who served on the Port Washington school board from 1995-98, attained …

Weber HSA co-presidents ask residents to vote "yes" on the school district's budget.
- OPINION

Friday, May 7, 2010
To the Editor: The month of May brings many things — warmer weather, longer daylight hours, bouts of spring fever (as well as those darn allergy attacks), but in school district terms, it heralds the arrival of the school budget vote. Each year, as your parent leaders at Weber Middle School, we make a plea for support for the budget. This year will be no different. While spring is a wonderful season, the budget season is not. We attend numerous Board of Ed meetings, many of them contentious. We hear reports of state aid decreasing and cuts in federal funding, as well as increasing costs of supplies. Basically, the starting point for the budget is to maintain programing, but with less funding available to the district. An impossible task, …
