Labor Market Figures Revised for North Hempstead

Unemployment on Long Island, while unchanged, was the lowest in the state.

The jobless picture on Long Island is clearly improving and has been for longer than initially believed, according to state labor experts. Revised figures show that job growth was larger than reported earlier, with Long Island forging ahead. “We’re seeing a much better labor market picture than previously thought,” said Shital Patel, an analyst for the state Labor Department in Hicksville. Long Island had the lowest unemployment rate of the ten regions in New York, at 7.8 percent, unchanged from a year ago, according to Labor Department reports, the latest of which were released Tuesday. By comparison, New York State’s rate was at 9.2 percent while the national rate was 8.8 percent. In addition, at a time when it was reported to have lost …

That Dog Don’t Hunt

Speaking on hydrofracking, the state senator says we can’t let economics trump environmental safety.

In the South, if you were to make a plan that isn’t particularly sound or useful, you might hear someone utter, “That dog don’t hunt.”  For example, if a husband planned to golf on his wedding anniversary, that’s definitely “a dog that don’t hunt.”  His decision to smooth things over by telling his wife he’ll take her along – even more so.  If she responds with tickets to a Broadway show on Super Bowl Sunday – well, you get the picture. In my ten years as an elected official, first as a mayor, now as a senator, I’ve seen quite a few bad ideas, these proverbial dogs that don’t hunt.  The most recent among these was the reported possibility that waste water from hydro-fracking in upstate New York might be processed at treatment plants on …

Tiffany Lights Up Nassau Museum of Art

Museum exhibit 'The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany' highlight iconic glassmaker and Long Islander.

You know Tiffany from the sparkle of its jewelry or the magical way light passes through its trademark glass. The name just evokes light. Now you can see several influences at work in a new exhibit at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn: “The Paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany: Works from a Long Island Collection.” Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the son of Tiffany and Company founder Charles Louis Tiffany, was an accomplished painter who became a master glassmaker and founded Tiffany Studios.  “When Louis Comfort Tiffany talks about his art he really does talk about light-infused scenes,” Nassau County Museum of Art Director Dr. Karl Emil Willers said. The exhibit features 125 paintings from Tiffany, which are from a single Long …

Global terrorism networks have been weakened to the point that another attack of the scale and sophistication of 9/11 would be nearly impossible, top NATO and EU officials said Monday. Do you feel safer 10 years after 9/11? Do you think Al-Qaeda still poses a significant threat without Osama bin Laden? Tell us in the comments.

North Hempstead Holds Historic Same-Sex Wedding

Town Clerk Leslie Gross weds Westbury couple Francisco Fuertes and Patrick Simeone just after midnight Sunday.

For same-sex couples, the wait to hear the words "I now pronounce you legally married," has been a long one. But early Sunday morning in the Town of North Hempstead, that phrase was bestowed upon Francisco Fuertes and Patrick Simeone in the Town's historic ceremony led by Clerk Leslie Gross. The Town was one of the first places in the state to host a same-sex wedding after the passage of the New York State Marriage Equality Act one month ago. Gross, the Town Clerk who decided to open on Sunday to give out marriage licenses on the first official day possible, called the event "monumental" and noted that she "felt like she gave birth or something." Kaiman Dispels Myths about Roslyn Country Club

Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman took some time during Tuesday's meeting to explain the issue behind the Roslyn Country Club.

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman used the beginning of the Town public hearing on the Roslyn Country Club Tuesday night to dispel some myths about project, which was later followed by a vigorous and long debate about the project. "The Roslyn Country Club is not a country club," Kaiman explained. "It is a community built by Levitt years ago that was designated by name as a place called 'Country Club'." Kaiman explained that this land includes a house, which would be converted into a catering facility, and a pool. He added that years ago this was a community pool, which went into foreclosure at some point and Mr. Malekan acquired the property and then operated it for several years. Community members have been inquiring for years…
