Hometown: Northport, Long Island, NY

Birthday: Jan. 14

Bio: After graduating from Temple University in Philadelphia with a B.A. in Journalism in 1990, Kelly spent a summer living on Fire Island covering all aspects of the barrier beach towns for the Fire Island News. Since then, her freelance work has appeared in The New York Times, Newsday, Popular Science, et al., and she has been covering the schools, government, businesses and, most importantly, people of various towns on the North Shore of Long Island from Huntington to Shoreham-Wading River for several local Long Island papers. Many of her editors have said she can find good stories anywhere. She is very excited to continue doing so for Northport.Patch.com

In her free time, Kelly loves to hang out at the library, surf the Internet, go to the beach and hike on the many wondeful trails in and around Northport. Also, she and her husband Dan spend much time with their three daughters, Maeve, Grace and Margo, all students in the Northport-East Northport School District.
Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible and human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal certain key beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable.

This disclosure is not a license for our editors to inject these beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that our beliefs are on the record will force us to be ever mindful to write, report, and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you, the user, ever think you see evidence that we failed in this mission, we wholeheartedly invite you to let us know.

Politics

How would you describe your political beliefs? I was born and bred a liberal Democrat (with socialist leanings, even) and continue to be one. I believe that all of society does better when those on the bottom are lifted higher. However, I have learned over my years of covering local politics that many times you don't even know what national party elected officials represent, at least in the villages of New York. And I always strive for balance in my articles, no matter my take on the issue. I believe if you asked anyone whom I have covered in the past decade, they would agree that, above all, I am firm but fair.

How religious would you say you are? Casual, observant, devout, non-religious? I am what I jokingly refer to as a 'recovering Catholic.' My parents remain very devout. I still find some comfort in the rituals of Roman Catholic Mass but rarely, if ever, go anymore.

Local Hot Button Issues What do you think are the most important issues facing the community? Harbor water quality, use of open space, downtown development, and aging infrastructure.

Where do you stand on each of these issues? I believe it's important to strike a balance between redevelopment and preservation of the downtown. I feel strongly funds need to be directed toward fixing our infrastructure, particularly the sewer pipes and system.
