What's Biting At The Town Dock?

Beautiful weather draws crowd of fishermen Monday.

Combine unseasonably mild August temperatures with the beautiful summertime setting at the Town Dock and what do you get?

Lot's of happy fishermen — sort of.

With daytime highs lingering nearly the mid-70s, a slight breeze and sunny skies, dozens of anglers were at the dock in Port Washington Monday.

But not much was biting for most on hand, according to one Oyster Bay man who hadn't reeled in a fish since arriving just after noon.

"I'm not too good at fishing at low tide or high tide, but I try," joked Bob Scarro.

Fluke, snapper and striped bass can usually be had at the dock, according to Scarro who said the fish might be biting more at night.

"It's cooler and the fish might be hungrier," he said.

But not all at the dock were coming up empty handed.

Gabriel Gaspar, 7, landed five snapper by 4 p.m. while getting fishing lessons from his dad, Victor, of Mineola, who caught none.

And what did the kid learn from the old man?

"Daddy's rod is not very good," said Gabriel. "It only catches rocks."

But regardless of the haul, the family said they enjoy the relaxation of putting a line in the water on such a beautiful day.

"We come out here at least five or six nights a year," said Gabriel's mom, Rhonda, on a bench nearby.

The gorgeous weather is expected through at least Tuesday.

As for the fish, it's anybody's guess.
