Port Washington Police Adds New Vehicles to District's Fleet

Additions were at no expense to taxpayers, police say.

James Salerno, who recently became acting chief of the Port Washington Police District, shared this news about the newest additions to the district's fleet.

Members of the community who attended the Memorial Day parade and/or HarborFest were able to see one of the new additions to the Port Washington Police District fleet, our HMMWV (High Mobility Multi Mission Wheeled Vehicle). This vehicle, along with our 2-½ ton cargo truck was obtained at no cost to the community. Asset forfeiture funds were used to have the HMMWV painted and the appropriate graphics added.

Police Officer John Chalker recently retired after serving 32 years with the Police District. I asked John to assist me in writing this article – here is his response:

"Port's veterans were quite impressed with the new HMMWV (High Mobility Multi Mission Wheeled Vehicle) that was un-veiled by PWPD at the Memorial Day Parade. I also informed the vets that a 2 1/2 Ton 6X6 cargo truck was also acquired by the Police District.

"After an episode like Sandy last year these vehicles would be indispensible tools for PWPD. Both vehicles (with preparation) can ford water up to 5 feet deep or so. The smaller HMMWV is rated to carry 1-1/4 ton of cargo cross-country. The 6X6 can carry 2-1/2 tons of cargo cross-country. Both trucks can carry more weight on paved surfaces. The HMMWV is armored and will provide protection to its crew in dangerous situations involving guns and/or bombs. The 6X6 has a multi-fuel engine. With proper maintenance both vehicles will provide service for 20 years or more. Both vehicles offer PWPD an ability to answer the citizens needs even in the most difficult circumstances.

"The veterans are thankful for the PWPD's foresight in obtaining these vehicles and that PWPD acted upon "lessons learned" during Super Storm Sandy."

As Acting Chief, I would like to commend Deputy Chief Ron DeMeo and Police Officer Drew Haagenson for their efforts in securing these vehicles. The Police District will continue to be proactive in our efforts in keeping the community safe.
