Screening - Ahead of Time

Ruth Gruber will speak at a screening of the award winning documentary, Ahead of Time, about her remarkable life as an international foreign correspondent, at Temple Sinai of Roslyn.  An inspiration not only for her career but also for her vitality and humor at 100 years old, Ruth will speak before the film and answer questions after the screening.  The program is free to the community and is being sponsored by the Temple Sinai Government Relations Committee.  "Temple Sinai is delighted to host this inspirational speaker.  She will leave all who attend with a sense of awe and a renewed outlook not only on historical events, but on the state of the world today," said David Schwartz, President, Temple Sinai of Roslyn.

Ruth Gruber didn't just report the news...she made it!  As a student in Germany in 1931, she attended a Hitler rally, observing first-hand the rising tide of Nazism.  The first journalist to enter the Soviet Arctic in 1935, Ruth also traveled to Alaska as a member of the Roosevelt administration in 1942, escorted Holocaust refugees to America in 1944 in a secret wartime mission, covered the Nuremberg trials in 1946 and documented the Haganah ship Exodus in 1947.  Her relationships with world leaders including Eleanor Roosevelt, President Harry Truman and David Ben-Gurion gave her unique access and insight into the modern history of the Jewish people.

Born in Brooklyn in 1911, Ruth Gruber became the youngest PhD in the world at age 20 before going on to become an international foreign correspondent and photojournalist at age 24.  She emerged as the eyes and conscience of the world.  With her love of adventure, fearlessness and powerful intellect, Ruth defied tradition in an extraordinary career that has spanned more than seven decades.
