To Patch: Nassau Has A Lot 'On the Table'

Responding to Port Patch’s Debate Coverage

The upcoming Nassau County election is a crucial one. It will have a profound impact on taxpayers and on the communities we call home for years to come. I hope, therefore, that Port Washington Patch doesn't trivialize our only local debate by limiting its coverage to a silly jibe about food recommendations.

The League of Women Voters worked very hard to set up a Meet the Candidates night. Port residents dedicated several hours to share thoughtful questions about actual issues. We discussed important topics like government borrowing, taxes, assessment problems and a multi-million dollar corruption case. The taxpayers who fund the $3 Billion Nassau government have much bigger issues “on the table."

Port is known all over the Island for all its wonderful restaurants, which I have enjoyed all my life. All local businesses are important. In fact, my platform focuses on helping all businesses and I would love to discuss that. To promote one restaurant at a debate wouldn't even be appropriate. I have all businesses and all taxpayers in mind.

People know that I lived in Sands Point and spent my time in the Port community. I have been working very hard to get to know Port issues and residents. My advisor, who I work closely with at the Legislature, grew up in Port Washington and lived in Port until recently. His family has been living and working in Port as a well-known part of the community for over thirty years. This has been one of many great resources for me, combined with my own friends and family contacts in town.

Further, elected officials and community leaders who appreciate my qualifications and vision have been helping me connect with Port residents every day for many months. I am in the same caucus and have been working with the current legislator for Port Washington for a year-and-a-half. I have his endorsement. He has been a great help, familiarizing me with local residents and topics of concern. Combined with all the events I have attended and groups I have gotten to know, I believe I am building a good understanding of and appreciation for the community.

Nassau County is facing serious issues right now. I am happy to discuss these important topics with any Nassau constituents. My office is 516-571-6218. My campaign email to discuss my platform is info@DeliaDeRiggiWhitton.com.

In the meantime, my latest campaign promise: I will memorize the names and not only the locations of my favorite restaurants.
