Staycationing in Port

Take a vacation right here in town.

The economy may still be in the tank, but that's no reason to skimp on leisure pastimes, especially here in Port Washington. With Long Island Sound as a backdrop, Port offers plenty of water, dining and entertainment activities that are easy on the wallet. This year, families forgoing costly vacations may find that when it comes to staycations, Port fits the bill.

Manorhaven Beach Park is always a good option, with its Olympic pool and children's pool (residents pay between $5 and $8 for daily admission), and its views of Manhasset Bay. The park also features tennis and basketball courts, a playground, beach access, a boat ramp and more.

Did you know that you can also rent a sailboat right here in town?  Port Sailing School rents boats from $150 to $275, though members pay less. The school also offers lessons for all skill levels, beginners to experts. Owner-operator Chris Nihill, said "Children and other family members are welcome to come on our boats as well. We provide all the life-jackets and other equipment that you will need to sail."

Or, try kayaking.  Atlantic Outfitters, a tackle and boating shop, rents kayaks for $20 an hour.  Although no experience is necessary, lessons are available for $60.  Atlantic Outfitters rents fishing rods too for $10, and bait for $5.  Fishing licenses can be obtained for as little as $5, but will require some advance planning.  Both kayaking and fishing are great activities for children, as long as they can fit into life-jackets. For an an outing on the water, bring along the same accoutrements as for a day at the beach: hat, sunglasses, towel, and so on.

For the less adventurous, try Port Washington Public Library, where there are films, lectures, concerts, book discussions, art galleries and more.  "Take a look at the library calendar—there are events basically every day," said Port resident Alize Margulis.  "The other day I attended a lesson where I learned how to do the tango, for free."  While you're there, pick up a free or discounted pass to some of the top museums in the region.

Port is abundant with restaurant choices for every price point. Or, bring a picnic dinner to Sunset Park and watch the sun set over Manhasset Bay.  And don't be surprised to hear others say they feel like they've gotten away without having traveled at all.
