Tornado Watch for Nassau

National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch until Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for much of the Tri-State area, including Nassau County, until Wednesday at 8 p.m.

The watch is part of a line of thunderstorms expected to blow through the region by sundown, mostly in northern Nassau. The forecast calls for possibly strong gusts of wind. The watch extends across the Long Island Sound.

Having experienced being in a tornado as a ten year old child living in Tennessee, I am not, by any means, a storm chaser. However, in the house I live in now - I would wait under the stairway in the basement for the storm to pass. If you live in a house without a basement, you should either wait for it to pass lying face down in the bathtub (with a mattress lying over you) for protection, or lay down on a closet floor next to the baseboard of the wall. If the wind dies down and everything becomes still and extremely quiet, and the next thing you hear is the sound of a train whistle blowing, the tornado is upon you, and I am sure you would be praying to survive, as I was - when I was ten years old. - Lori Lee Noreman, Old Bethpage
