Tree Lighting Ceremony Draws Hundreds

Port Residents Share Holiday Spirit At Blumenfeld Park

There were angels, a brass band, a live nativity scene and at the conclusion the sparkling lights on the tree in the Blumenfeld Family Park on Main Street.  Hundreds of grown-ups and children turned out to share in the festivities for the 15th annual tree lighting ceremony Sunday.

Local business leaders Ayhan Hassan, Fred Falconer, Frank Heffernan and Gerald and Connie O'Reilly were honored for their financial support of the event. Peggy Kennedy, the person responsible for “instigating" the first tree lighting ceremony 15 years ago threw the switch, lighting up the tree.

The event is made possible each year by a group of volunteers known as the Christmas Tree Lighting Committee, which meet throughout the year to plan the event.
