Bosworth Defeats De Giorgio in North Hempstead Supervisor Race

Great Neck Democrat to fill seat vacated by longtime Supervisor Jon Kaiman.

Nassau County lawmaker Judi Bosworth was elected Town of North Hempstead supervisor Tuesday night, continuing a longtime Democratic stronghold on the position.

According to the Nassau County Board of Elections, Bosworth received 54.8 percent of the vote to beat North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio of Port Washington.

Bosworth said the future will be about building consensus, building bridges and building in the town.

"This one is about future and our future is about building," said Bosworth, accepting victory at Westbury Manor just after midnight. "It's about having a building department that is one that will help people to develop and build in North Hempstead."

Signs and big rallies didn't win the election, it was the voters, according to Bosworth.

"People getting to the polls and voting, that's what wins elections and that's why we won this one," said Bosworth who received a total of 23,746 votes to De Giorgio's 19,569.

The three-term 12th District legislator was chosen by voters to fill the seat held by former Supervisor Jon Kaiman, who served for 10 years.

On Tuesday, Bosworth thanked Kaiman and said her victory could not have been possible without his leadership.

Elected to five terms, Kaiman resigned Sept. 23 after being named special adviser on Superstorm Sandy relief by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He also serves as chairman of the Nassau Interim Finance Authority.

In October, Democrat John B. Riordan, the former town attorney, was appointed interim town supervisor until Dec. 31 by the town board.

A former New York City public school elementary teacher, Bosworth received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in early childhood education from City University of New York at Queens College. She served on the Board of Education in Great Neck Public for 16 years.

Bosworth is married to Dr. Jay Bosworth. The couple, who reside in Great Neck, have two adult children, Brian, a physician, and Michael, an attorney.

During her campaign, Bosworth vowed to continue to build on the foundation set by Kaiman. Under Kaiman's tenure, North Hempstead was ranked in Money's 2008 listing of the “Best 100 Places to Live in America."

Environmental-friendly programs such as: S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants/Pharmaceutical Collection Event), North Hempstead's townwide school recycling program, Operation Clean Sweep and North Hempstead’s Earth Day Program were initiated under Kaiman.

North Hempstead has been led by 37 supervisors — four of them Democrats.

Elected to a two-year term, Bosworth will serve as the second female supervisor in North Hempstead. Democrat May Newburger held office as town supervisor from 1994-2003.

In 1989, Ben Zwirn was the first Democrat elected supervisor in North Hempstead.
