Crowds Brave Rain For Menorah Lighting in Port

Chanakuh celebration draws a crowd Wednesday.

More than 250 people braved inclement weather to gather at the Long Island Rail Road station Wednesday for the lighting of Port Washington's 14-foot menorah on Main Street.

The rain stopped at about 6 p.m. as the program began with a crowd in good cheer for the celebration of Chanukah and its unusual partner this year, Thanksgiving.

Rabbi Shalom Paltiel spoke of the joint message of both holidays being that of faith, liberty, joy and the power of good to prevail against odds.

Latkes and jelly donuts, traditional Chanukah treats, were served along with turkey to honor Thanksgiving, all donated by Everfresh Kosher Supermarkets of Great Neck. Starbucks donated coffee. EmbroidMe of Willinston Park donated 200 scarves embroidered with the event logo, a turkey menorah.

Main sponsors of the event were the Peter and Jeri Dejana Family Foundation.

The Maura Bros erected the steel menorah, as they do each year.
