How to Avoid Traffic Jams

Tips for avoiding traffic

If you own a car or have ever driven on Long Island or the LIE, than you would
agree that fewer things are more frustrating than being stuck in traffic. It’s
hard on your car and your nerves, not to mention that it will make you late for
whatever it is that you had planned.

Traffic can be caused by a great number of things like inclement weather, car
accidents, construction, stupidity, and about a million other things. Though it
is sometimes impossible to avoid, there are steps you can take to lessen your
chances of being stuck in a traffic jam. Here are some tips:

- Plan alternate routes. It is a good idea to have a few different routes
mapped out when driving somewhere. At the first sign of a backup, you may have
the opportunity to switch routes and avoid the issue.

- Adjust your work schedule. The average person works between 8am and 6pm. This also means that they all usually travel to and from work at the same time. If
you plan on getting to work an hour early and leaving an hour late, you will
likely avoid the majority of the traffic.

- Listen to the radio. News stations on AM news stations tend to do traffic
updates multiple times an hour and are usually pretty accurate. Keep updated
and plan accordingly. This ties in with having multiple routes mapped out.

- Use technology. There are multiple aps like Waze and Traffic Monitor that
gives instant traffic updates. These aps will alert you of changing traffic
patterns, traffic severity, and even where the police are hiding. They are
great tools and can potentially wasted time and frustration of being stuck in
traffic.

All though traffic is sometimes unavoidable there are steps you can take to be
prepared and lessen your chances of being stuck in it. Follow these tips and
plan ahead and you will notice that your time in the car will decrease
dramatically. Remember to drive smart and drive safe.
