Baer will be serving on the board, previously having completed a period as a trustee from 1999 to 2001. Both Baer and incumbent William Hohauser’s terms will begin on Jul. 1, 2011 and last through Jun. 30, 2014.

Baer has put three children through the school district, including two who are still currently attending Port Washington Schools and one son who graduated Schreiber High School four years ago. Additionally, he is an international logistics executive who has run a global business “that involved making budget decisions on an ongoing basis as well as resource allocation,” he explained in a previous Patch interview.

After his election victory, Port Washington Patch was able to ask Baer a few important school and community related questions:

What do you hope to accomplish and/or contribute while serving as a trustee?

“I would like to see foreign language offered in our elementary school program.  I hope to contribute my creativity on finding ways to expand our program offerings without breaking the bank.  I would like to look for additional ways to promote our students to the outside world so that both our academic and athletic achievements are "marketed" to a greater degree.”

Is there an issue in the Port schools that you find particularly important?

“I would like to see additional exposure to public speaking as it is a life long skill that will help all of the children throughout their lives.  Increased proficiency in writing is another topic.”

What are you looking forward to the most about being a member of the board of education?

“Being involved in the marvel we call education.  For me it is a true wonder that at the age of 5 children arrive at the front doors of the school building and some 13 years later we hand them a diploma as they continue on to careers or additional education. All that goes into that process is simply amazing.”
