Port Washington Budget Approved; Sloan, Hohauser, Ryan Elected to School Board

School district's $127 million 2010-11 budget passes by more than 700 votes; Proposition 2 passes by close to three-to-one margin.

Voters approved a $127 million 2010-11 budget for the Port Washington Union Free School District by a vote of 2,880 to 2,102 on Tuesday.

Board president Karen Sloan and trustee William Hohauser were re-elected along with Bob Ryan, who has previously served as chairman of a private school Board of Trustees in Old Westbury. Ryan led the way with 3,137 votes while Sloan received 3,057 and Hohauser nabbed 2,818. Joe Mirzoeff, who served on the Port Washington school board from 1995-98, attained just 1,680 votes.

"I'm pleased for the community and the students to be able to continue the standards of education that we have because the budget passed," Sloan said. "And I am thrilled to be able to continue to serve the members of the community."

As Hohauser received the least votes of those elected, his term will begin on Wednesday, May 19, and he will remain in that seat until former school board member Susan Sturman's term would have expired on June 30, 2011. The top two vote-getters, Ryan and Sloan, will serve from July 1, 2010, until June 30, 2013. Jean-Marie Posner, who did not run for re-election, will be replaced on the board by Ryan on July 1.

Along with the school district's budget (Proposition 1) being approved by district residents at $127,093,245 for the 2010-11 school year, Proposition 2, the sale of two pieces of vacant property — one in the Village of Manorhaven, located along the easterly side of Ashwood Road (the "Ashwood Road parcel"), and a second parcel, containing a concrete tunnel supporting the bed of Sands Point Road (the "Sands Point Road parcel"), was approved — 3,319-1,186.
