Special Taxi Fares Available for Adult Ed Students

Port Washington School District teams up with Delux Transportation Services to offer $5 fares for Port Washington Continuing Education students.

For those interested in enrolling in Port Washington's Adult and Continuing Education Program but who may be hesitant about registering due to fear of driving at night or in inclement weather — not to worry, there is help.

Delux Transportation Services and the Port Washington School District have joined forces in a brand new initiative that will provide taxi service at a reduced rate for those enrolled in the Continuing Education Spring program.

"The special fare we are offering is $5 each way between any residence in the Port Washington School District and a continuing Education class location," Delux Executive Vice President Andrea Majer said. "When you call to reserve a taxi, please mention that you are participating in this promotion."

Majer came up with the program and after pitching it to Delux's vice president of sales and marketing, Robert Howard, the two approached Regina Farinaccio, Manager of Department of Educational and Community Services for the Port Washington School District, with the plan. In almost no time, the idea became a reality.

"Andrea is very generous and always donates taxi vouchers so that disadvantaged parents without transportation can take a cab when they need to get to school for a meeting or carry home groceries," said Farinaccio who went to Schreiber High School with Majer. "Bob Howard knew that some potential Continuing Education students might not want to drive at night so this is a way to get to and from class and gives them an incentive to do something that is good for yourself. People who take these classes have fun, learn something new and meet people."

The program, which begins this spring, is part of an ongoing collaboration between the school district and local businesses. Some local restaurants teach the Adult Ed cooking classes while a handful of small business owners offer workshops and lectures on a variety of topics.

Farinaccio said she is hopeful that the program with Delux will encourage more residents to participate in the Adult and Continuing Education program. "Some adult learners hesitate to enroll in a class because they don't want to drive at night or in bad weather," Farinaccio said. "Delux is making it easier for them to enrich their leisure time."

Registration for Adult and Continuing Education spring classes began earlier this month and the semester begins on March 8. To make a taxi reservation, call (516) 883-1900 and mention the Continuing Education promotion to receive the special rate.
