A New Season Means New Competition for Port's Girls Volleyball

The Port Washington girls volleyball team is looking to win another conference championship.

2010 record: 15-1 (Conference Champions, lost in first round of playoffs)

Head Coach: Patty Borzon (first year)

Top Player: Hayley Kerr, senior, outside hitter

Position Breakdown: Head Coach Patty Borzon took 16 girls on this year’s team. The number was so large because there were many girls who can play multiple positions, so throughout the season there will be different faces in different positions. “Obviously every position is important, but our outside and middle hitters and blockers are going to have a big role this year,” Borzon said.

Expectations: “I do have high expectations,” Borzon said, even acknowledging that there is a tough season ahead. “The girls are going to have to work a lot harder this year.” Borzon has her team training and working hard towards winning a second consecutive conference championship. “Because we were conference champs last year we expect to do the same this year,” said senior libero, Bethia Kwak.

News and Notes: After going 15-1 last season and winning their conference, the Vikings are now moving to the AA-1 Conference. Powerhouse Massapequa is in this conference. Entering the conference is going to test the ability of the team and see who steps up against tougher competition. “We’ve been working hard," Borzon noted. "A lot of conditioning, getting ready for rallies, a lot of attacking and a lot of blocking. 

On playing in a tougher conference, senior Hayley Kerr said, “We have nothing to lose.”
