Lady Vikings Knock Off Hempstead

Third-quarter outburst highlights Port Washington's fifth win of the season.

Picking up where it left off at the holiday break, Port Washington's girls' basketball team got the best of Conference AA-III rival Hempstead, 60-50, on Tuesday afternoon.

The visiting Lady Vikings (5-4 overall, 3-1 in conference play) exploded for 23 third-quarter points to stretch a seven-point halftime lead to a 55-42 advantage.

"It was our first game in a few weeks, but the girls were ready," Port Washington head coach Dennis Trottier said. "It's a tough gym to win in."

The Lady Vikings were led by senior Emma Horowitz's 17 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore Ariana Spagna's 10 points.

"We had a lot of fast-break points," Trottier said. "We scouted them and thought they'd have trouble keeping up with our pace."

Celine Jolicoeur scored a game-high 27 points for Hempstead (0-4), which made the final look respectable thanks to a big fourth quarter. "She's a nice player," Trottier said, "but we defended her well when we needed to."

Eighth-grader Christina Leonard scored eight points and sophomore Hayley Kerr added seven for the Lady Vikings, who travel to Hicksville on Friday for a 7 p.m. tip.
