Lady Vikings Lacrosse Continues Undefeated Season

Girls lacrosse's big first-half lead too much for Floral Park Knights to overcome.

The Schreiber Lady Vikings girls lacrosse team continued its impressive undefeated season on Tuesday with a 17-11 win over Floral Park.

The Vikings (6-0-1 Conference III, 11-0-1 overall) came out a little flat, and a few turnovers led to a 2-1 Knights' lead.

"I don't think this was one of our better performances at all," Vikings coach Raquel Piraino said after the win.

Despite hitting the crossbar once and the post twice within a one-minute offensive sequence, the Vikings kept firing away, and eventually their relentless offense paid off. Schreiber went on a five-goal run to grab a 6-2 lead over a struggling Floral Park squad.

After starting the season 7-1, the Knights (4-3 Conference III, 7-4 overall) have now dropped three straight games.

The Knights scored with four minutes left in the first half to make it a 6-3 game, but the Vikings closed the half out on a three-goal run to give them a 9-3 halftime lead.

"We'll chalk it up, it's in the 'W' column, but I think today, for whatever reason, it didn't click," Piraino added.

The second half was as back and forth as it gets. Floral Park cut the lead down to 10-7, forcing coach Piraino to call a timeout. The Lady Vikings responded to the timeout and secured the team's 11th victory with another five-goal run.

Sophomore Christina Commons had a huge day for the Vikings by scoring a career-high 10 goals and also adding one assist.

"Some other people had opportunities and they stepped up," Piraino said of her team. "It was a team effort, especially from some of the players coming off of the bench — that's always a good thing when other players step up."

Junior tri-captains Alexa and Jackie Froccaro, who have been the team's backbone for most of the season, combined for just two goals — their lowest total of the season.

"Jackie got hurt today in the early part of the game, so that's why she was out most of the game," Piraino said. "Alexa, today wasn't one of her better performances, but that's alright, she'll be ready to go in our next game."

Two goals might seem like a good total for anyone else, but it pales in comparison to the Froccaro cousins' recent 14-goal effort against Bethpage in the Lady Vikings' 16-1 win.

Senior tri-captain Ali Feldman finished with three goals and two assists, while Vikings' goalie Samantha Tilts kept the Knights at bay with 15 saves.

The Vikings will look to continue their undefeated season on Thursday when they host Friends Academy in non-league action at 4:30 p.m. The team will close out its Conference III schedule on Saturday during Port Washington Lacrosse Day .at Schreiber High School with a game against Long Beach at 11 a.m.
