Lady Vikings Pull Out Another Nailbiter

Girls varsity basketball team beats Valley Stream Cental for fifth conference win.

Port Washington's girls varsity basketball team rebounded from a tough loss to Herricks on Saturday by going on the road Wednesday night and completing a season sweep of Valley Stream Central, coming from behind for a 50-46 victory.

Christina Leonard was clutch in the fourth quarter for the Lady Vikings, who improved to 5-3 in Conference AA-III (7-6 overall). Leonard went 5-for-6 from the foul line down the stretch, including the go-ahead free throw with 1:30 remaining as part of a 12-point effort. Hayley Kerr added 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals and Emma Horowitz chipped in 11 points despite fouling out for a second straight game.

"Any time you can get a win on the road, it's good," Port Washington coach Dennis Trottier said. "I was proud of the way we fought back after they took the lead in the third quarter."

The Lady Eagles, who got 20 points from Nikole Williams, trailed by six at halftime but outscored the Lady Vikings in the third to take a 34-33 lead into the fourth. "They've got a pretty athletic team and did a better job on the boards than we did," Trottier said.

Next up for Port Washington is a trip to Carey on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Trottier's squad took the first meeting by a 17-point margin. "It's another tough gym," he said. "We're going in with the same game plan we used the first time."
