Port Defeats Baldwin in Girls Soccer Monday

Vikings first in conference standings.

The Port Washington girls soccer team defeated Baldwin 3-1 at home Monday.

"This was a really big game for us because we want to be conference champions," said Port Washington senior Annelise Meyding, chosen after the game by Head Coach Lauren Bishar to sum up the action after a gritty performance.

Meyding scored one goal, and an assist to Olivia Fetherston who scored the go-ahead goal 10 minutes into the second half for the Vikings who sit at the top of the conference standings.

One of the keys to victory for the Vikings (4-1-1 in non-league; 3-0-1 in conference Nassau Conference AA-2) was the team being able to make successful passes, and runs and create open spaces for each other which increased options for the girl with the ball, according to Meyding.

Giving up just one score, Port senior goalie Michele Lemmers was one of the stars of the game.

"Definitely without her we would not have been able to come out with this win," said Meyding.

Putting in good performances Monday for Port was junior Krista Ledins with one goal, freshman Casey Cybriwsky with an assist and senior Lindsay Edwards.

"She was a very, very big threat," said Meding of Edwards.

Next next up for the Vikings is a home match against Long Beach on Wednesday.
