Schreiber Softball Bounces Back With Big Win

Coming off two tough losses, the Lady Vikings top Hempstead for a three-game series sweep of the Tigers.

The outcome of this game wasn't in doubt very long as the Lady Vikings varsity softball team was dominant from the first inning on when they took on Hempstead on Tuesday.

Senior Emma Horowitz set the tone with a two-RBI single in the first and another in the second in her only two at-bats in the Lady Vikings' 20-8 win.

"I was happy that I was able to contribute to the win," Horowitz said. "We knew that we could beat this team so we didn't want to play down to their level. We played really well and up to the ability that we know we can play to."

Junior Violet Lee had a big day as well, reaching base five times and scoring four runs. As a team, the Vikings drew 21 walks to go with its 10 hits.

This win completed a three-game sweep of the series with Hempstead and moved the Lady Vikings into second in Conference IV with a 7-8 record.

"We came out of the gate focused with a desire to jump on them early and make sure they never felt it was a game," coach Eric Sutz said.

Eighth-grader Alex Caprariello pitched first two innings on the afternoon, giving up two runs and striking out three while giving up just one hit. Freshman Sara Marinelli pitched the following three innings, giving up six runs and striking out five.

"While not looking past Hempstead, the girls have their eyes on our last two games," Sutz said. "Enacting some revenge on the only two teams in our conference that have beaten us would be nice."

The Lady Vikings take on the conference-leading Freeport Red Devils on Thursday in their final home game of the regular season for Senior Night. They will then close out the regular season on Friday at Great Neck South.
