Donate Extra Produce from Your Garden to Feed The Hungry

To help the hungry, local gardeners are encouraged to plant and donate an extra row of produce to support local food relief agencies.

The program is part of the Plant a Row for the Hungry program, which is being spearheaded locally by the . The initiative is part of a national program, which began in 1995, that encourages people to share the surplus from their gardens with local food banks and soup kitchens.

These donations are often the only source of fresh produce for people in need. Port Washington residents donated more than 3,000 pounds of produce to local food banks during a previous implementation of the program.

Interested? Register for the program at one of three locations in town:

1) Alper's Hardware, 81 Main Street

2) Bayles Garden Center & Nursery, Inc., 88 South Bayles Avenue

3) North Shore Garden Center, Inc., 52 Avenue A

All extra produce should be delivered to Bayles Garden Center, at 88 South Bayles Avenue. Bayles Garden Center has agreed to store and to refrigerate the donated produce.
