A Grant Covers Camp Costs for PRC Outreach Kids in Port Washington

Nassau County Bar Association provided the grant.

Children from Outreach Program can
attend the organization's summer camp program this year thanks to the WE CARE Fund, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association.

The WE CARE Fund, which initially gave the PRC a $1,000 grant
in December 2011, recently gave a $4,000 check to the organization, which
will fund summer camp attendance for four Outreach children. The PRC's
summer camp program runs for six weeks and is available for children
ages two-and-a-half to five.

"Many of the kids in our Outreach program would not otherwise be able to
attend camp, so we are truly grateful," said Lisa Grossman, PRC's director of
operations. "Helping children from low-income families in our community to benefit from our camp activities is something that we at the PRC are very proud to offer."

As an example, Grossman said that one of the four children benefitting from
camp included a child who had separation issues, raising concerns that he'd have trouble attending pre-K this fall. He was so attached to his mother, he screamed every time she left.

But the staff eased his trepidations.

"Camp has been wonderful with him," Grossman said. Now, he is calming down and will totally be ready for Pre-K."

Another child, age 3, is now able to attend camp while her parents spend time with an older brother who is struggling in school and needs extra help. "They cannot afford tutoring but with the younger child in camp two hours three days a week, the parents can dedicate time to tutoring him themselves," Grossman said.

"The PRC is a wonderful resource for Port Washington residents that provides educational activities in an inclusive environment fostering community spirit," said Michael Masri, a partner at the law firm of Meltzer Lippe in Mineola and member of the WE CARE Advisory Board.
